Rushton Owens, Jr., 36, of Williamston, died Dec. 1, 2007. Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Rushton Sr. and Florine D. Owens. He was self-employed, Owens Floor Sanding Service and coached little league football at the Pelzer Recreation Center for many years. Surviving are his wife, Christy T. Owens; four sisters, Chrishton Tyler Owens, Zachary Chandler Owens, Noah Isaiah Owens and Landon Gabriel Owens; one brother, Benjamin Eugene Owens of Anderson; two sisters, Annie Ruth Biggers of Williamston and Mary Frances Donald of Pelzer. Funeral services were held Dec. 7 at the New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church in Williamston. Burial followed in the church cemetery.John McDonald Jr. John Kenneth McDonald Jr., 78, died Dec. 4, 2007 at NHC Healthcare of Laurens. Born in Greenwood, he was the son of the late John Kenneth McDonald Sr. and Katherine Edmunds McDonald. He is survived by six children, John Kenneth McDonald III of Greenwood, Jean M. Martin of Gray Court, Catherine M. Monroe of Abbeville, Elizabeth M. Stroupe of West Columbia, Stewart McDonald of Greenwood and William McDonald of McCormick; two brothers, Bobby McDonald of Greenwood and James McDonald of Piedmont; ten grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Memorial services were held Dec. 9 in the chapel of the Cremation Society of South Carolina, 328 Dupont Drive, Greenville, SC.
James Jim Earnest Davis, 61, husband of Pam Garrison Davis, of Piedmont, died Dec. 6, 2007. Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late R. V. William and Alice Rogers Davis. He was an employee of Bargain Foods in Pelzer. In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters, Alice Rutherford of WI, Ashley Rushford of Las Vegas, NV, Ana Howard of Lyman, Jamie Davis of the home; step-daughter, Stephanie Bowen of the home; step-son, Jimmy Redding of Easley; brothers, T.C. Davis of Simpsonville, Rick Davis of Summerville; and six grandchildren. Memorial services were held Dec. 11 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.
Ezra M. Baker died Dec. 5, 2007 at Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home. Born in Pickens County, he was a son of the late Rev. Willie H. and Maggie Walker Baker. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a retired truck driver with J.D. Hollingsworth. Surviving are a sister, Irene B. Tolbert of Greenville; brothers, Milford Baker of Williamston, Roosevelt Baker of Easley and Charles Baker of Greenville. Funeral services were held Dec. 8 at Reedy River Baptist Church. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
James William McGill, Sr., 89, of Belton, husband of the late Geneva Trotter McGill, died Dec. 9, 2007 at Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home. Born in Anderson, he was the son of the late Ira Lucius and Frances Gaines McGill. He was an U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. He was a retired textile employee and a member of Whitefield Baptist Church. He is survived by two children, Marilyn McGill Stevens of Belton, James Jimmy William McGill, Jr. of Belton; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren; sister, Nancy Eileen McGill Moreau of Lafayette, LA; and a brother, Pete McGill of Iva. Funeral services were held Dec. 11 at Whitefield Baptist Church. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Whitefield Baptist Church, 207 Mitchell Road, Belton, SC 29627.
Funeral services for Jarrett Johnson, 21, were held Dec. 9, 2007 at the Brown Funeral Home. He was the son of Dolene Johnson of Mauldin and Jimmy Lee Johnson of Greenville. Surviving are brothers, Chenita Shumate, Sade Johnson, Thomas Harley, Terrell Harley, Kendrick Johnson and Darius Johnson; and grandmother, Mamie Foster of Piedmont.
Carson Lyn Medlin, 13, of Greenville, died Dec. 8, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Medical Center. Born in Greenville, he was a son of Mark Medlin and Karen Grindstaff. He attended West Gantt First Baptist Church and attended Washington Center School and was a former student at Meyer Center for Special Children. Surviving in addition to his parents of the home are; a brother, Drake Mraovich of Liberty; and grandmothers, Glenda Grindstaff of Greenville and Sylvia Browning of Pelzer. Funeral services were held Dec. 11 at West Gantt First Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to the Mauldin Miracle League, 21 Rock Side Court, Greenville, SC 29615.
Ruby Bernice Reaves Pressley, 67, wife of Grover C. Pressley, of Piedmont, died Dec. 8, 2007. Born in Charlotte, NC, she was a daughter of the late Jennings Bryant and Bernice Ruby Stanley Reaves. She retired from Michelin Tire Corporation and was a Senior Leader for Avon Cosmetics. In addition to her husband, she is survived by children, Deborah P. Hipps of Belton, Becky A. Pressley of Piedmont, David M. Pressley of Simpsonville, Robin P. Cooley of Pelzer; sister, Barbara A. Thurston of Belhaven, NC; and nine grandchildren. Graveside services were held Dec. 12 at Greenville Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, P.O. Box 1947 Quantico, VA 22134.
Douglas Ervin Penland Sr., 87, of Piedmont, died Dec. 11, 2007 at his home. Born in Anderson, he was the son of the late Grady and Maude Compton Penland and huband of the late Margaret Reese Penland. He was a retired electrical foreman for J.P. Stevens and also worked at Foam Partners. He attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovahs Witnesses. He was a World War II Army Veteran. Surviving are a daughter, Beverly Messier of Mauldin; three sons, Doug Penland Jr. of Piedmont, Terry Penland of Pickens and Joel Penland of Easley; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Graveside service will be held 10:30 a.m Dec. 13 at Graceland West Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Gentiva Hospice, 440 Roper Mountain Road, Greenville, SC 29615.
Melvin Dirton, 78, of Greenville, died Dec. 8, 2007 at his home. Born in Simpsonville, he was a son of the late Ezell Sullivan and Mamie Dirton. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Surviving are daughters, Melanie Dirton, Angela Cruell and Rachel Jenkins, all of Greenville, Gloria Clark and Darlene Williams, both of Piedmont; sons, Ricky, Mitchell and Chris Dirton and Vernon Valentine, all of Greenville; brother, Robert Dirton of Greenville; 27 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Watkins, Garrett & Woods Mortuary. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens. |
