Travis Hugh Rock Nation, 77, husband of Lib H. Nation of Belton, died Oct. 23, 2008 at Rainey Hospice House. Born in Hartwell, GA, he was the son of the late Hoke B. and Delree Fleming Nation. He was a member of Belton First Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Army. He worked for the Belton Police Department and retired from the Anderson County Sheriffs Department. Surviving in addition to his wife are; children, Leigh Jones of Simpsonville, Rhonda Kennedy of Lyman and Rocky Nation of Seneca; eight grandchildren; sisters, Mary Hanks of Belton and Joann Hawkins of Pelzer. Funeral services were held Oct. 26 at Belton First Baptist Church. Burial followed in Belton Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Belton First Baptist Church.
Billy Bill Adcus Ford, 73, of Belton, husband of Betty Young Ford, died Oct. 23, 2008 at AnMed Health Medical Center. Born in Anderson County, he was a son of Sudie Page Ford and the late Truman Lee Ford. He was owner of Ford Builders, Inc. and a member of Williamston Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his wife of the home; son and daughter-in-law Steve and Teresa Ford of Belton; sisters, Betty Casey, Rachel Brandt, Brenda Ginn, all of Williamston; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held Oct. 26 at Williamston Presbyterian Church. Burial followed in Cedar Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Lois Splawn Kay, 89, of Greenville, NC died Oct. 24, 2008. She was born in Laurens, a daughter of the late William Wallace Splawn and Lois Wood Splawn. She was a graduate of Pelzer High School. She was a charter member of Northside Methodist Church in Greenville, SC. She was predeceased by her husband, Roy B. Kay. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Kerry Kopanski; two granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Wallace Splawn of Deland, FL. Graveside service was held October 29 at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Michael Gary Cooper Mickey Shaw, 59, husband of Sher Shaw, died Oct. 27, 2008 at his home. Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late Monty Cooper and Hellon Sexton Stone. He was formerly employed with Cooper Medical Supply and Susans Restaurant. He was a member of New Life Baptist Church. Surviving in addition to his wife are his son, Matthew of Greenville; four sisters and four brothers, Sandra Wardlaw of Williamston, Sheila Williams of Pelzer, Janik Nix of Greenville, Suzanne Carter of Greenville, David Shaw of Walterboro, Mark Shaw of Savannah, GA, Mont Cooper, Jr. of Campobello, and Steve Cooper of Greenville. Funeral service was held Oct. 29 at Cremation Society of South Carolina in Greenville.
Edgar Eugene Yates, 36, of Greenville, died Oct. 27 at St. Francis Hospital. He was the son of Edgar Landrum and Deborah Ann Yates, he was employed with Piedmont Mental Skills. Surviving in addition to his parents are two sisters, Brenda Worley of Greenville and Dana Yates of Piedmont. Funeral services will be held Oct. 30 at 11 a.m. at Graceland Mortuary.
Horace Anthony Tony Thompson, 41, of Greenville, died Oct. 25, 2008. Born in Greenville County, he was a son of Matthew and Julia Thompson Rosemond. Surviving are daughters, Chavez Thompson of Mauldin, Ayanna Starks of Greenville, Leeza Thompson of Simpsonville and Toni Thompson of the home; son, Cavarggio Thompson of Mauldin; sisters, Melissa Taylor of Piedmont and Jamel Mayes of Greenville; brothers, Harvey Taylor and Kevin Mayes, both of Greenville and Corey Harris of Greenville; and one grandchild. Funeral service will be held Oct. 30 at 2 p.m. at Watkins, Garrett and Woods Mortuary. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
Paulette Stone Gibson, 62, of Greenville, wife of Charles Linny Gibson, died October 27, 2008 at McCall Hospice House in Simpsonville. Born in Williamston, she was a daughter of the late Paul Erin and Constance Allen. She was a homemaker and a member of Carolina Community Church in Liberty. Surviving are her husband of the home; daughter, Debbie Stone of Belton; son, Todd Stone of Belton; step-daughters, Tiffany Lynn Gibson of England, Kari Gibson of Alabama; sister, Doris Faye Smith of Piedmont; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Vinson Benny Arlon Lyle, Sr.. 63, of Piedmont, Alabama died October 21, 2008 at his home. He was born in Piedmont, Alabama, was a U.S. Army veteran and was a retired carpenter. He was predeceased by his mother Alice Lyle. Surviving are one son, Vinson Arlon Lyle Jr.; daughter, Tonya G. Lyle Smith; eight grandchildren, all of Williamston, SC; two sisters, Jo Ellen Pogue-Puckett and Rosielene McDonald, both of Piedmont, Alabama. Funeral services were held October 23, 2008 at Thompson Funeral Home.
Bertha Lee Davis Callaham, 76, wife of Vernon Callaham of Belton, died Oct. 23, 2008. Born in Anderson County, she was the daughter of the late Ira and Annie Mae Crawford Davis. She was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church. Surviving in addition to her husband are son, Ray Callaham of Belton; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Cryptside service was held Oct. 25 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.
PIEDMONT - James L. Dawson, 72, husband of Wilma H. Dawson, of 806 Old River Road, passed away on Friday, October 24, 2008, at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born in Knoxville, TN on September 4, 1936, he was the son of the late John and Lillie Rider Dawson. After moving to the Greenville Area in 1966, he worked for several years with Fluor Daniel, formerly Daniel Construction Company, before beginning his career with Duke Power in 1969. He retired with twenty-three years of service. After retiring from Duke Power Company, he started a guttering business with his son Steve, where he worked until 2002. He was also employed with Force One from 2005-2007. He was a Christian and a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Piedmont. Surviving are his wife of forty-seven years, Wilma Harris Dawson of the home; sons, Stephen Dawson and his wife Donna of Piedmont, Michael Dawson of the home, Randall Dawson and his wife Tamera of Piedmont, and Charles Dawson and his wife Lee of Greenville; and grandchildren, Erica Dawson, Tyler Dawson, Casey Dawson, Corey Dawson, Hannah Dawson, Colten Cotner, and Deanna Moore. He is also survived by one sister, Reva Treblas of Summerfield, FL; and by several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Dawson was predeceased by seven brothers, Edward, Carl, Andy, Dewey, Reo, Winslow, and Lonzo; and by four sisters, Dorothy, Nora, Gladys, and Eva. The family would like to express their special thanks to the nursing staff of the 5th floor ICU at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Visitation was held 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Leon Porter and the Rev. Dr. Johnny Daniels officiating. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens. Ruth Bigy Cohn, 86, of Greenville, died Oct. 24, 2008. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Thomas Evans and Edna Evans. She was the wife of the late Rev. James R. Cohn. She was also predeceased by her first husband, Rev. Thomas R. Bigby. Surviving are three daughters, Suzanne Davis Glenn of Myrtle Beach, Sandy Bigby Thornton of Greenville and Phyllis Bigby Cothran of Piedmont; son, Thomas Bigby of Greenville; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren; six sisters, Mary Sharpe, Millie Montgomery, Esther Hopkins, Nina Nease, Francis Clyburne, Jeannette Bailey; and brother, Carey Evans. Funeral service was held Oct. 29 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown Chapel. Burial followed in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Bobby Lee Grant, 78, of Piedmont, died October 23, 2008. Born in Chester County, he was a son of the late Amos Mason and Alice Estelle Roberts Grant. He retired from Bi-Lo, served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the First Southern Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Sue Grant; two daughters, Sheryl Weston of Biloxi, MS, Marsha Calvert of Pelzer; brother, Thomas H. Grant of Greenville; a sister Margaret Yarbrough of Rome, GA; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Funeral service was held Oct. 26 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Cemetery.

Angela Dawn Rutledge, 19, of Honea Path, died October 25, 2008 in Columbus, OH. Born in Anderson she was a daughter of James Eddie Rutledge and the late Debbie Graham Rutledge. She attended Belton-Honea Path High School and was on the cheerleading squad. Surviving are her father, James Eddie Rutledge of the home; brothers, Greg Williamson of Anderson, Carey Williamson of Belton, Kent Rutledge of Honea Path and James Carter of Williamston; sisters, Dana Rutledge of Honea Path and Erlene Glenn of Anderson; and grandmother, Olivia Graham of Anderson. Funeral service will be held October 30 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Garden of Memories in Belton.
Nettie Christine Leopard Ruff, 88, of Belton, widow of John Daniel Pete Ruff, died Oct. 22, 2008 at Hospice House. Born in Ninety Six, she was a daughter of the late Robert Birley and Mattie Lou Ellison Leopard. She was retired from Cushman Mills and a member of Eastview Baptist Church in Belton. Surviving are daughters, Patricia Ann Coker and Betty Jane Williams, both of Belton; sisters, Jeanette Schall of Graniteville, Ann Anderson of Rock Hill, Joyce Gardner of Saluda, June Gibson, Marie Marlar, both of Ninety Six; brothers, John Robert Leopard, Fred Leopard, both of Ninety Six; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Oct. 24 at Gray Mortuary Chapel, Pelzer. Burial followed in Elmwood Cemetery in Ninety Six.
WILLIAMSTON - Nelle Strickland Coker Jackson, 89, formerly of Davis Street, widow of Samuel Otis Jackson, died Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at Riverside Living Center. Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late Leroy and Lelia Lockaby Strickland. She was retired from the Kendall Company and a member of Grace United Methodist Church. Surviving are daughter, Reta Jo Smith of Williamston; son, Larry W. Coker and wife, Pat of Belton; grandchildren, Vickie S. Shealy and her husband, James Grey Shealy, II, Barry Dean Coker, Terry Lee Coker; two great-grandchildren, James Grey Shealy, III, Joshua Lee Shealy; and special friends Ivan and Jennifer Vargas and children. Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Friday at Beaverdam Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Revs. Kempie Shepard and Karen Radcliffe. Robert Lewis Blackstone, 64, of Pelzer, husband of Kitty Blackstone, died Oct. 22, 2008 at his home. Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late James Orville and Ella Mae Pittman Blackstone. He was retired from Experimental Fabrics and was in the U.S. Army Reserves. Surviving are his wife of the home; sons, Robert Bit Blackstone of the home, Jason Crawford of Easley; sisters, Joyce Pittman, Betty Blackstone, both of Piedmont, Nina Satterfield of Easley, Lillian McDonald of Michigan; brothers, Roy Blackstone, Donald Blackstone, both of Piedmont; and three grandchildren. Earl William Culbertson, 85, husband of Mary Campbell Culbertson, died October 23, 2008 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late James Curtis and Willie Jeanes Culbertson. He was retired from the Charleston Air Force Base, of the Baptist faith, and was an Army veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife of the home; daughters, Judy Malone of St. Petersburg, FL, Sandra Harrelson of Duncan; son, Jimmy Earl Culbertson of Jacksonville, FL; brothers, Wesley C. Culbertson of Simpsonville, Billy Joe Culbertson of Blue Ridge; sister, Iris Henderson of Williamston; seven grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Gary Michael Pearson, 61, husband of Frances Redden Pearson of Pelzer, died Oct. 22, 2008 at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson. Born in Anderson, he was a son of Juanita Thrasher Pearson and the late Oscar Roy Pearson. He was the former owner and operator of Cycle Plus and Pearson Electronics. Surviving are his wife, Frances Redden Pearson of the home; sons, Kenneth Pearson of Long Beach, CA, Kevin Pearson of Anderson; stepsons, Christopher Redden, Samuel Dees, Scott Lathen, Adam Clark and Jason Anderson; mother of Anderson; brother, Keith Pearson; sister, Beverly Rodriguez; two grandsons; mother of his children, Patricia Carico; and nine step-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Oct. 25, 2008 in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home. Interment followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Helen Inez Campbell Phillips Spearman, 88, of Piedmont, widow of Ernest Dean Spearman, died Oct. 24, 2008 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Nathan and Alice Bagwell Campbell. She was twice married, first to the late R.L. Phillips, was a homemaker and a member of Washington Baptist Church. Surviving are a son, Billy Edward Phillips of Pelzer; daughters, Linda Trotter, Kay Barwick, and Sandra Kelly, all of Piedmont; step-sons, Jack Spearman and Billy Spearman, both of Pelzer; step-daughters, Dot Anders of Abbeville, Ann Turpin of Gray Court and Maxine Blackston of Pelzer; seven grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Funeral service was held Oct. 27 in the Chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Burial followed in Washington Baptist Church Cemetery. |
