Shirley Elizabeth “Beth” Hollis Shoemaker, 79, widow of William Martin Shoemaker, of Pelzer, died October 1, 2008 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late James H. Hollis and the late Rachel Hall Hollis. She retired from Westinghouse and was a member of Augusta Road United Methodist Church.

Surviving are daughters, Dianne Allison of Pelzer, Kim Maddox of Greenville; step-mother, Mary Hollis of Belton; sister, June “Polly” Sanders of Colorado; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held Oct. 4 at Augusta Road United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the Augusta Road United Methodist Church General Fund, 8324 Augusta Road, Pelzer, SC 29669.


DEWITT STONE

Harper Dewitt Stone, 87, of Pelzer, died Oct. 1, 2008 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late William Harper and Emmie Pack Stone. He was owner and operator of the Stoneybrook Fishing Lake and a member of Guthrie Grove Church of God of the Abrahamic Faith.

Surviving are brother, John Henry Stone of Pelzer; sisters, Ruby S. Kay and Janice S. Garrett, both of Pelzer.

Funeral services were held Oct. 3 at Guthrie Grove Church of God of the Abrahamic Faith.

KAMRYN LACI  “MIGGIE” WEST

Kamryn Laci “Miggie” West, 4, of San Antonio, TX, daughter of Jason and Rhonda Gail Griffin West, died Sept. 27, 2008.

Surviving are her parents; sisters, Kristen, Kaitlin, Lindsey; brothers, Justin, T.J., Nathan, all of San Antonio; grandfather, Charles Wayne Griffin of Virginia Beach, VA; and great-grandmother, Elinor P. Griffin of Honea Path.

Graveside services were held Oct. 4 at Greenville Memorial Gardens.


JAMES ALFRED GILLIAM

James Alfred Gilliam, 88, husband of Margaret Tripp Gilliam, died Sept. 30, 2008 at Richard M. Campbell VA Nursing Home.

Born in Honea Path, he was a son of the late James Webb and Sudie Gambrell Gilliam.

He was retired from Woodward Refrigeration Company and a member of Augusta Road Church of Christ. He was a United States Army veteran.

Surviving in addition to his wife of Greenville are a daughter, Rita Polzin of Lexington, KY; son, Ray Alfred Gilliam of Piedmont; sister, Lucille Smith of Lyman; brother, Lewis Gilliam of Piedmont; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held October 6 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. Burial followed in Antioch Christian Church Cemetery.


CLARENCE WILBOUR COOPER

Clarence Wilbour Cooper, 86, husband of Eugenia “Gene” Cason Cooper, died Oct. 1, 2008 at McCall Hospice House.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late Clarence and Lula Craft Cooper. He was retired from Western Union Telegraph Company. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and retired from the U.S. Air Force reserves. He was a member of East Park Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Charles Cooper of Indiana and John Cooper of Illinois; three daughters, Luane Cooper-Whang of NV, Rose Parker of TN and Betsy Hurlebaus of NC; brothers and sisters, Margaret Sightler, Frances Edwards, Jean White, Gerald Cooper, and Wayne Cooper; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to East Park Baptist Church, 12 Ebaugh Avenue, Greenville, SC 29607.

Funeral service was held Oct. 4 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.


DEBRA PHILLIPS KIRBY

Debra Sue Phillips Kirby, 50, of Piedmont, wife of Eugene “Buddy” Kirby, died Sept. 30, 2008.

Born in Robbinsville, NC, she was a daughter of Tony and Jumilta Wheeler Boozer of Piedmont and Wallace and Karen Phillips of Robbinsville, NC. She was a member of River Road Baptist Church and was retired from Interfilm Holdings.

Surviving in addition to her husband are daughters, Lori, Summer, Tiffanie and Gina; a son, Thomas; brothers, Jimmy Phillips of NC and John Phillips of TN; sister, Dianne Phillips Holby of CO; and ten grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Oct. 2 at Robinson Funeral Home. Burial followed in Robinson Memorial Gardens.

MCAURTHUR LEROY DAVIS

Mcaurthur Leroy “Mac” Davis, 65, husband of Ellie Pirkle Davis, of Pelzer, died Sept. 30, 2008 at McCall Hospice House in Simpsonville.

A native of Walhalla, he was the son of the late Henley McCoy and Delia Carver Davis. He was a self-employed construction worker and was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Gregory Davis of Greenville; daughters, Pamela Porter of Pelzer and Stephanie Campbell of Greenville; brothers, Winfred Davis of Pelzer and Leon Davis of Walhalla; sisters, Evelyn Hunnicutt of Walhalla, Francis Hightower of West Union and Patricia Nicholson of Westminster; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Oct. 4 from the chapel of Davenport Funeral Home. Burial followed in Neville Cemetery in Walhalla.


ETHEL CHAPMAN

Ethel Francis Simmons Chapman, 67, of Lowndesville, wife of Lalen Douglas Chapman, died Oct. 4, 2008 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late John Ernest and Clara Hamby Simmons. She was a homemaker and attended the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Lowndesville.

Surviving are her husband of the home; sons, Billy Chapman of Pelzer, Johnny Chapman of Westminster, Steve Chapman of Honea Path, Roger Chapman of Pelzer; daughter, Robbie Smith of Pelzer; brothers, David Simmons of Pelzer, Bruce Simmons of Pelzer, Terry Simmons of Anderson, Ernie Simmons of Easley; sister, Linda Blackshire of Piedmont; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Oct. 7 at Gray Mortuary Chapel, Pelzer. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Anderson.

CHARLES McGAHA

Charles Luther McGaha, 70, formerly of Honea Path, died Oct. 4, 2008 at the Veterans Hospital in Columbia.

Born in Anderson County he was a son of the late Andrew and Lena Coker McGaha. He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church of Clinton. He was a retired welder and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Surviving are one son, Rickey Medlock of Pelzer; three daughters, Amy Jaco of Drew, MS, Christie Ballard of Honea Path and Angela McGaha of Due West; one brother, Robert McGaha of Honea Path; one sister, Diane Kay of Belton and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Oct. 7 at Pruitt Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery in Anderson. 

Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.


JACK JEANES

Jack Robert Jeanes, Jr., 60, of Pelzer, husband of Linda Gail McEntire Jeanes, died Oct. 6, 2008 at his home.

Born in Pelzer, he was a son of the late Jack, Sr. and Eunice Pauline Cooley Jeanes. He was formerly employed with B&R Services and a Baptist.

Surviving are his wife of the home; daughters, Tammy Childress of Pelzer, Barbara Davis of Anderson; sons, Donnie Jeanes, Jerry Jeanes of Williamston, Tony Jeanes of Piedmont; sister, Diane Jeanes of Pelzer; brothers, Bill Jeanes of Belton, Jimmy Jeanes of West Pelzer and eleven grandchildren.

The family is at the home and will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.

Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Friday at Beaverdam Baptist Church Cemetery.
