Mary Ann Coot Morgan Branch, 74, of West Pelzer, widow of Kenneth Carl Branch, died Sept. 19, 2008 at Hospice of the Upstate. Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late Edward Jonas and Pearl Morgan. She was a homemaker and a member of the Pelzer Church of God. Surviving are sons, Lanny Bair of West Pelzer and Carl Branch; sisters, Agnes Jenkins and Virginia Fountain, both of Pelzer; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held Sept. 22 at Flat Rock Cemetery in Liberty. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.
Helen Mapp Sloan, 79 of Piedmont, widow of John Lindsay Sloan, died Sept. 19, 2008. She is survived by children, Dr. Helen Elizabeth Sloan, Jane Sloan Cooper, of Sullivans Island, Dr. John Lindsey Sloan Jr. of Piedmont, Dr. David Mapp Sloan of Providence, NC and Mary Sloan Andrews of Greenville; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Roy Bates Clyborne, 81, of Piedmont, died Sept. 20, 2008. Born in Greenville County, he was the son of the late Charles Pickett and Margaret Nichols Clyborne. He was drafted into the Army in 1945. He retired from Pet Dairy. He was a member of East Park Baptist Church. He was predeceased by his wife, Amaryllis Dalton Clyborne. Surviving are his daughter, Donna Kay Lyda; and a brother, Harry H. Clyborne. Funeral services were held Sept. 23 at The Mackey Mortuary. Interment followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens. Mildred Parker Ayers, 88, died Sept. 18, 2008 at the AnMed Health Medical Center. Born in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late Edward Munson Parker and Emily Kersey Parker. She was retired from the Singer Company and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Beverly A. Bramlett of Williamston, Jeanine A. Elrod of Pendleton; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral service was held Sept. 21 in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home. A private graveside service was held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 1809 N. Main Street, Anderson, SC 29621.
Pamela Rose Singleton Hawkins, 35, died Sept. 16, 2008 at Hospice of the Upstate, Anderson. Surviving are five children, Sapphire Foster, Wade Douglas Hawkins, Jr., and Destiny Hawkins of Georgia, Carson Douglas and Nicole Frisbee, both of Ohio; mother, Patricia McConathy and step-father, Rick of Honea Path; father and step-mother, William Singleton and Donna of Piedmont; and sister, Sylvia Singleton and brother Roger Singleton, both of Belton. Funeral services were held Sept. 19 in the Chapel at Greenville Memorial Gardens.
Jean Campbell Morrow, 60, died Sept. 16, 2008 at Bon Secoures St. Francis Health System in Greenville. She was born in Clinton and was the daughter of the late Clarence Buddy and Vina Vernell Campbell. She was a homemaker and was a member of Davidson Street Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Jerry S. Morrow of the home; daughter, Kristie Howell of the home, three brothers, Jerry Campbell of Clinton, Jack Campbell of Laurens and James Campbell of Laurens; two sisters, Janie Taylor of Greer and Joy Bishop of Piedmont. Funeral services were held Sept. 19 at Gray Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Rosemont Cemetery.
William Franklin Whitaker, 84, husband of Wilma Trotter Whitaker, of Anderson, died Sept. 18, 2008 at the AnMed Health Medical Center. Born in Anderson, he was the son of the late John Ashley Whitaker and Nelle Mae Watt Whitaker. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He retired from J. P. Stevens Company and was a member of Eureka Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, of the home; son, Ken Whitaker; daughter, Sheryl W. Saxon, all of Anderson; step-daughter, Debra Ann Hawkins of Williamston; brother, Alford Whitaker; sisters, Claudine Howell, Dorothy Shaw, all of Anderson; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Edna Harper Whitaker. Funeral service was held Sept. 20 in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home. Entombment followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum with Military Honors. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.
Bill R. Carey, Sr., 65 and his wife Ruth A. Carey, 70, of Greenville, died Sept. 16, 2008. He was born in Anderson to the late John P. Carey and the late Dixie Clinkscales Carey. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, Vice-President of Dixie Rubber, Inc. and was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. She was born in Fairbury, Illinois to the late Wesley Kiefer and the late Loretta Van Camp Kiefer. She retired from Bell South and was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. They are survived by a son, Bill R. Carey Jr. of Greenville; daughters, Melissa Carey of Greenville and Rebecca West of Pelzer; and six grandchildren. Mr. Carey is also survived by three sisters, Shelby Foster of Greensboro, NC, Brenda Craft of Mauldin and Nancy Crawford of Greenville. Mrs. Carey is also survived by two sisters, Wanda Kiefer of Easley and Marcia Simmons of Tampa, FL. Funeral service was held Sept. 20 at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Greenville. Entombment followed at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Tabernacle Childrens Home, 3931 White Horse Road, Greenville, SC 29611.
Martha Cooley Caldwell, 86, widow of the late Ed Caldwell of Belton, died Sept. 21, 2008 at the Aiken Regional Medical Center in Aiken. Born in Anderson County, she was the daughter of the late Sanford A. Cooley and Ada Copeland Cooley. She was retired from the textile industry and Anderson County School District One. She was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church. She lived in Trinity Lutheran Home in Aiken for the past three years. Surviving are a son, Jim Caldwell of Aiken; daughter, Nancy Jane Martin of Orange Park, FL; twin brother, Marvin Cooley of Belton; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sept. 24 at Cedar Grove Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Frances Jones Hammond, 86, of Greenville, widow of James Walter Hammond, died Sept. 21, 2008 at St. Francis, Downtown. Born in Pickens County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Lawrence and Alyce D. Jones. She was a homemaker and member of Cedar Rock Baptist Church. Surviving are five children, J.W. Benny Hammond of Greenville, Nancy Earlene Mabry of Williamston, Frances Milwee Blackshire of Greenville, Sandra Jane Jeanes of West Pelzer, Wanda Faye Day of Greenville; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dixie McAdams of Greenville. Memorials may be made to the John I. Smith Scottish Rite Center for Childhood Language Disorders, 817 Cleveland Street, Greenville, SC 29601.
