Georgia Jackson, 77, of Mauldin, died Sept. 21, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late Willie David and Janie Woods Golden. Surviving are daughters, Ruscenia Jackson and Gwen Jackson, both of Greenville and Stariyer Bowens of Charlotte,NC; sisters, Willie Mae Meekins of Pelzer and Pearlie Marie Phillips of Sandy Springs, MD; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sept. 26 at New Forksvile Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
John Smith, Jr., 54, of Waterloo, died Sept. 22, 2007 in the Self Regional Medical Center in Greenwood. He was a member of the Smyrna AME Church and was employed with the Bekins Company in Ninety-Six. He is survived by one son, John Adams Smith of Piedmont; his parents, John Smith, Sr. and Leola Cunningham Smith of Waterloo; four brothers, Bruce Smith, Charlie Smith of Waterloo, Grady Smith of New Mexico and Wilbert Smith of Columbia; two sisters, Ruby Cunningham and Tammie Smith of Waterloo. Funeral service was held Sept. 26 at the Smyrna AME Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Raymonde Bouttemant Hall, 81, of Greenville, widow of Russell M. Hall, died Sept. 24, 2007. She was a self-employed shoemaker and of the Catholic faith. Surviving are two daughters, Evelyne Rivella of Piedmont and Saunia Horvath of Manville, NJ; one son, Jack L. Hall of Manville, NJ; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Recitation of the Rosary was held Sept. 26 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest.
Corrina Lillie Trotter Mayfield, 71, widow of Lloyd Mayfield, of Pickens, died Sept. 24, 2007 at Hospice of the Upstate. Born in Pickens County, she was a daughter of the late Alonzo Trotter and Janie Bearden Trotter. She was a retired textiles worker and of the Baptist faith. Surviving are a daughter, Charlotte King of Piedmont; sons, Roger Mayfield of Pickens, Gary Mayfield of Pickens, and Ronald Mayfield of Pelzer; sisters, Rosa Lee Chappell of Six Mile and Jane Posey of Sunset; brothers, Harvey Trotter, Jack Trotter, Donnie Trotter and Clayton Trotter, all of Pickens; ten grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sept. 26 in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home. Burial followed at Friendship Baptist Church cemetery.
Spencer Delano Cooper, Sr., 60, of Pelzer, widow of Johnnie Collins Cooper, died Sept. 23, 2007 at St. Francis Hospital. Born in Greenville, he was a son of Marie Garrison Robinson of Pelzer and the late Woodrow Wales Cooper, Sr. He retired from J.P. Stevens and attended Rehoboth Baptist Church. In addition to his mother, he is survived by daughter, Michele Kelley of Mauldin; son, Spener D. Cooper, Jr. of Greenville; sisters, Glenndale Grainger, Mellodee Cureton, both of Pelzer, Clovia Swayngham of Greenville; brothers, Woodroe Cooper, Wyndel Cooper, both of Greenville, Tyrone Cooper of Kershaw, Marlow Cooper of Byron, GA; and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sept. 25 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Burial followed in Rehoboth Baptist Church Cemetery in Piedmont. Joe Horace Browning, 70, husband of Josephine Sammons Browning, of Travelers Rest, died Sept. 23, 2007 at his home. Born in Pelzer, he was a son of the late James Calvin and Elizabeth Thomas Browning. He served in the U.S. Air Force, retired from Celanese and was of the Baptist faith. Surviving in addition to his wife are a stepdaughter, Joyce Dupes of Easley; two sisters, Doris Simmons of Greenwood and Catherine Traynham of Simpsonville; a brother, Earl Browning of Pelzer; and five step-grandsons. Funeral services were held Sept. 25 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at Grand View Memorial Gardens.
Dec. 7, 1955 - Sept. 22, 2007 PELZER, William Anthony Tony Hankins, 51, husband of Wanda Cummings Hankins of 9 Parker Street, died Saturday, September 22, 2007. Born in Anderson, he was a son of Bobbie Cooper Hankins and the late William Eugene Hankins. He was an Army veteran, a residential contractor and a member of NewSpring Church. Surviving are his wife of the home, two daughters, Megan Hankins Taylor of Gray Court, Ashley Ruth Hankins of the home; son, William Dylan Hankins of the home; mother of Williamston; two sisters, Stephanie Hankins of Pelzer, Rene Hanks of Anderson; two brothers, Greg Hankins of Due West, David Hankins of Belton; grandson, Drew Taylor; father and mother-in-law, A.W. and Emma Cummings of Pelzer; special friends, Dr. B.C. McConnell of Anderson, Terry Watkins and Kenny Cartee of Pelzer. Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Gray Mortuary Chapel with interment in Greenville Memorial Gardens. The family was at the home of A. W. and Emma Cummings, 33 Adger Street, Pelzer, and received friends Monday at Gray Mortuary. Judy McDowell Shull, 65, of Easley, wife of the late Francis Adam Chipper Shull, died Sept. 22, 2007 at her home. Born in Greenville County, a daughter of the late Fred and Geneva Jones McDowell, she retired as an administrator with the Pickens County Board of Disabilities and Special Needs. She was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. Surviving are a son, Warren Dean Cooke of Orange Park, FL; three daughters, Sherie Burdett of Piedmont, Kelly Harrison of Simpsonville, and Lyn Shull of Greenville; brother, Leonard Ronald McDowell of Greenville; two sisters, Freddie Reid of Simpsonville and Pat Dodson of Easley; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sept. 24 at Rock Springs Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Army Staff Sgt. Terry Daniel Wagoner, died Sept. 14, 2007 in Iraq, while serving on his second tour of duty. He attended Woodmont High School. Surviving are his wife, Kate; daughter, Dianna Louise; parents, Scott and Katherine Wagoner of Pelzer; two sisters, Angie Epps of Honea Path and Tiffany Wagoner of Piedmont; grandmother, Iris Poterfield and grandfather, Marvin Traber. Funeral service was Sept. 22 at Washington Baptist Church, Pelzer. Interment was held at Cannon Memorial in Fountain Inn on Sept. 22 with full military honors.
Rev. William Roy Julian, 80, widower of Virginia Harvey Julian, died Sept. 21, 2007 in Anderson. He was a son of the late William Russell and Daisey Bell Loftis Julian, and step-mother, Alice B. Julian. He served several churches in the Upstate area during 35 years as a Southern Baptist minister. He was a member of Tanglewood Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Surviving is a daughter, Brenda J. Alexander of Piedmont and two brothers, David and John W. Julian. Funeral services were held Sept. 23 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. Burial followed in Cannon Memorial Park in Fountain Inn.
Edward Singleton, of Greenville, died Sept. 20, 2007 at his home. Born in Thomasville, North Carolina, he was a son of the late Charles and Gussie Carolina Singleton. Surviving are his wife, Arner Singleton of the home; stepmother Katherine Singleton; daughter Adelle Ryan of Piedmont; nephew reared in the home, Kenneth Vassell of Greenville; sisters, Bertha Wade of California, Jennette Witherspoon and Catherine Jeffries, both of North Carolina; brother, Charles Singleton of North Carolina; seven grandchldren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sept. 23 at Watkins, Garrett and Woods Mortuary. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
Virginia Miller Case, 97, widow of Austin C. Case, died Sept. 23, 2007 at Easley Baptist Hospital. Born in Rochester, NY, she was a daughter of the late John Hudson and Elizabeth Sliter Miller. She was formerly employed at N.Y. Central Railroad. She was a member of Brighton Presbyterian Church in Rochester, NY. Surviving are a daughter, Virginia Case Ginger Worrell of Easley; two sons, Austin Case of Greenville and Dan Case of Piedmont; sister, Elizabeth Betty Savard of Geneseo, NY; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sept. 25 at Greenville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel.
Herbert Harris McClellan, 80, formerly of Anderson, died Sept. 22, 2007 in Birmingham, AL. Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Van P. McClellan, Sr. and Nellie Mae Prince McClellan. He retired from the Ballistic Missile Defense System Command. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Surviving are two sons, Mark McClellan of Birmingham, AL and Ken McClellan of DelMar, CA; former wife, Barbara McClellan of Birmingham, AL; a sister, Etta Mae McClellan Yon of Anderson and a brother, William D. McClellan of Williamston; and three grandchildren. Graveside services were held Sept. 25 at New Prospect Baptist Church in Anderson.
Stella Marie Bennett Moulder, 87, formerly of Pelzer, widow of Lucas Carl Moulder, died Sept. 18, 2007 at Laurel Baye Health Care in Greenville. Born in Cherokee County, GA, she was a daughter of the late Noel C. and Annie Taylor Bennett. She retired from the Kendall Company and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pelzer. Surviving are sons, Richard Moulder of Belton, Ronald William Moulder of Ringgold, GA; sisters, Thellie Segars, Viola Moore, both of Pelzer; six grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sept. 20 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
Charlie Burton Thompson, 76, husband of Betty Lowe Thompson of Belton, died Sept. 17, 2007 at Community Health Partners in Lorain, Ohio. Born in Anderson County, he was the son of the late George Hence and Jesse Darby Thompson. He was Baptist and a US National Guard. Surviving in addition to his wife are: sons, Jerry Wayne Thompson of Pelzer and Chad Eric Thompson of N.J.; brother, Bill Thompson of Belton; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sept. 21 at Cox Funeral Home Chapel. Entombment followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. Memorials may be made to Shriners Childrens Hospital.
Robert Edison Garrett, 73, of Piedmont, widower of Patricia Ann Chapman Garrett, died Sept. 19, 2007 at his home. Born in Canton, NC, he was a son of the late Walter Robert and Emma Lou Tinsley Garrett. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, retired from Michelin and was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are daughters, Phyllis Ann Garrett of Greenville, Sondra Dale Allison of the home; sisters, Bobbie Jean Williams of Piedmont, Mary Ann Eubanks of Dallas, TX; brothers, Harold S. Garrett of Cowetta, OK, Billy J. Garrett, Sr. of Princeton, R. Frankie Garrett and Donnie Lee Garrett, both of Piedmont; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sept. 23 at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
Steve McKnight, 51, of Piedmont, died Sept. 19, 2007. He was of the Baptist faith and spent his career as a master auto mechanic. He is survived by his family. Private memorial services will be held.
Frankie Thrift Murray, 94, wife of the late Dan Murray, of Seneca, died Sept. 18, 2007 at Westside Living Center in Greenville. A native of Madison, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Joanna Walls Thrift. She was a homemaker and a member of Seneca Church of Christ. She is survived by a son, Bobby Murray of Piedmont; daughter, Lois Hardy of Seneca; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sept. 21 in the Chapel of Davenport Funeral Home, Walhalla. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Walhalla. Kathleen Sudie Smith Chapman, 98, widow of Allen Chapman, formerly of Williamston, died Sept. 19, 2007 at Willow Creek Living Center in Iva. Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late Hubert and Iler Odell Lollis Smith. She was a homemaker and the oldest member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church. Surviving are daughters, Bertie Campbell, Martha Thomas, both of Belton; sons, Ray D. Chapman of Belton, Raymond Chapman of Williamston, Roger Chapman of Townville; sisters, Sybil Garrett, Laura Jean Elgin, both of Belton; 25 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sept. 21 at Cedar Grove Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Gladys Allison Stephens, 72, wife of Jack Kenneth Stephens of Piedmont, died Sept. 21, 2007 at St. Francis Hospital. Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late Rev. John Roy and Margaret Obera Trammell Allison. She was retired from Michelin Corp. and a member of Southside Baptist Church. Surviving are four daughters, Teresa Allen Collins of Pelzer, Susan Allen Grogan and Dolly Stephens Bishop, both of Piedmont, Connie Cricket Mitchell of Easley; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
