CECIL DECKER

Cecil Belmont Decker Jr., 75, of Pelzer, husband of the late Shirley Ann Decker, died Sept. 12, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital.

Born in Mason County, Michigan, he was a son of the late Cecil Belmont Decker, Sr. and Elsie Lorraine Reidl Decker. A U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict, he was retired from B.K. Industries, and attended Our Lady of the Rosary Church.

Surviving are a son Cecil Belmont “Butch” Decker III of Pelzer; daughters, Jennifer Alice Earle of Kenneth City, FL; Cathy Joanne Stanford of Clearwater, FL; Cindy Lorraine Lauterberg of Sarasota, FL; Linda Wright of Greenville; Carla Denise Machacon of Greenville; Cecile Ann Collins of Pelzer; sister, Carol Ann Noli of Kingman, AZ; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sept. 16 at Greenville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel.


LAUREN TOMPKINS

Lauren Scruggs Tompkins, 24, of Anderson, wife of Matthew Tompkins, died Sept. 13, 2008 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Spartanburg, she was the daughter of Jimmy Scruggs and Robin Hays Pearson. She attended Newspring Church.

Surviving are her husband of the home; daughter Halle Reese Tompkins and son Hunter Brent Tompkins, both of the home; father and stepmother Shannon Scruggs of Boiling Springs; mother and stepfather John Pearson of Williamston; brothers, Nathan Scruggs of Anderson, Taylor Scruggs of Boiling Springs, Jacob Pearson, Hunter Pearson, and Chandler Pearson all of Williamston; sisters, Megan Scruggs and Jenna Fulmer both of Boiling Springs; paternal grandmother, Jean Scruggs of Chesnee; maternal grandmother Anita Haynes of Gaffney; maternal grandfather Richard Hays of Camden, TN.

Funeral services were held  Sept. 16 at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.


JULIA GARRETT

Julia Faye Child Garrett, 36, wife of Kevin Mark Garrett, died Sept. 13, 2008 at the home of her parents.

Born in Anderson County, she was the daughter of John Mack and Vera Ethel Gilstrap Child. She was employed as an assistant manager by Pier One Imports and was a member of Homeland Park United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband of the home; son, John Thomas Garrett also of the home; parents of Anderson; sister, Celeste Honea of Anderson; and brother, David Child of Columbia.

Funeral services were held Sept. 16 at the Gray Mortuary Chapel. Burial followed in New Hope Baptist Church cemetery.

LUTEWYLE PHILLIPS

Lutewyle Melton Phillips, 93, widow of Raymond Phillips, died Sept. 12, 2008 at Summit Place Living Center in Simpsonville.

Born in Liberty, she was a daughter of the late John Rufus and Nell Massey Melton. She was a homemaker and a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church.

Surviving are son, Raymond Phillips, Jr. of Pelzer; daughter, Sylvia Cheros of Greenville; sisters, Lois Taylor of Moonville, Ameliza Cothran of Pelzer; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Sept. 14 at Rehoboth Baptist Church in Piedmont. Burial followed in the church cemetery.


DAVID GEORGE

PIEDMONT - David Harold George, 66, husband of Patricia Diane Williams George, of 2 Thompson Road, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008 at his home.

Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late Clarence and Wenona Mattison George. He was the former owner of George’s Exxon and a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters, Donna Goodwin and her husband Jeff, and Lisa Whiten, all of Piedmont; son, Chris Whiten and his wife Wanda of Pelzer; sisters, Patricia Watson and Faye Bennett, both of Piedmont; brothers, Neal George and Tony George, both of Piedmont; and grandchildren, Katie and Haley Whiten.

Graveside services were held 3 p.m. Sunday at Greenville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Sam Fordham officiating.

The family respectfully requests that flowers be omitted and that memorials be made to Rehoboth Baptist Church, 1620 Old Pelzer Road, Piedmont, SC 29673.

BETTY KELLEY

Betty Jeannette Ross Kelley, 73 of Anderson, wife of the late C. Leon Kelley, died Sept. 15, 2008 at the AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Pelzer, she was a daughter of the late John Lester Ross Sr. and Fannie Mae Jordan Ross. She retired from Kroger Bakery in Anderson and was a member of Orrville Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving are her sons, David W. Kelley and A. Paul Kelley, both of Anderson; daughter, Vickie Brucke of Starr; sister, Norma “Boots” Graham of Calhoun Falls; 13 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held Sept. 18 at 3 p.m. in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home. Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 2 to 3 p.m.

DYLAN REID

Dylan Bruce Reid, infant son of Jeremy Bruce Reid and Terra Leigh Alexander of Pelzer, died September 10, 2008 at AnMed Women’s & Children’s Hospital.

Surviving in addition  to his parents are paternal grandparents, Frank and Elaine Reid of Belton-Honea Path; maternal grandparents, Alice Alexander of Piedmont, Terry Alexander of McCormick.

Graveside services were at White Plains Baptist Church on September 15.


'MARY LOU COUCH

Mary Lou Couch, 81, died Sept. 16, 2008 at Riverside Living Center in Piedmont.

Born in Piedmont, she was a daughter of the late William C. and Stella Rose White Couch.

She served as organist for Shiloh United Methodist Church and Piedmont Heights  Baptist Church, was a private piano teacher and worked for F.W. Woolworth.

Visitation will be 2:45-3:45 p.m. Sept. 18 at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Sept. 18 in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Piedmont.

MARGARET HANNA WHITE

Margaret Hanna White, 89, died Sept. 15, 2008 at St. Francis, Downtown.

Born in Wedgefield, she was a daughter of the late William J. and Lenora Celeste Andrews Nunnery.

She was a retired seamstress and a member of Laurens Road United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a son, Thomas E. Hanna of Piedmont; one grandson; brother, Larry Nunnery of Florence; and two sisters, Bessie Fowler of Long Branch, NJ and Celeste Jones of Atlanta, GA.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, George V. Hanna; and second husband, Herbert C. White.

Funeral service was held Sept. 17 in the chapel of Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. Burial followed in Woodlawn Memorial Park.

CARL D. COGGINS

Carl Dexter Coggins, 91, of Greer, widower of Janet Arsula Coggins, died Sept. 9, 2008.

Born in Reidville Community, a son of the late Dexter Spartan and Clara Trammell Coggins, he was a retired employee of Lyman Printing and Finishing and Bi-Lo. He was a member of Greer First Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, D. Ray Coggins of Columbia, five stepchildren, Johnny Gilstrap of Cedar Hill, TN, Brad Gilstrap of Blue Ridge, Linda Smith of Anderson, Jane Scoggin of Spartanburg, and Ann Kearney of Pelzer; a brother, Bill Coggins of Woodruff; a sister, Evelyn Rogers of Greer; 17 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sept. 13 at the Wood Mortuary. Burial followed in Wood Memorial Park.

LINDA ANN BENSON

Graveside service for Linda Ann Benson, 62, of Greenville, who died Sept. 8, 2008 was held Sept. 13 at New Prospect Church in Williamston. Interment followed in the church cemetery.


JOHN HOFFMAN

John Hoffman, 88, of Easley, husband of Mary Margaret Hoffman, died Sept. 10, 2008 at his home.

Born in Amsterdam, NY, he was a son of the late Aloiz and Sabina K. Hoffman. He was a chemist with Fouke Fur Company.

Surviving in addition to his wife are sons, John B. Hoffman, Jr. of Greenville and Ed Hoffman of Columbia; daughters, Mary Rose Callahan of Washington, NJ and Jane Pingley of Piedmont; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sept. 13 in the Chapel of Robinson Funeral Home Downtown.


JERRY C. CHAPMAN SR.

Jerry Clyde Chapman, Sr., 67, of Anderson, husband of Dorothy Durham Chapman, died Sept. 11, 2008.

Born in Williamston, he was the son of Rachel Saxon Davenport and the late Clyde Chapman. He was a Realtor with Century 21, Anderson Properties, Inc. and was a member of Capstone Community Church.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of the home; daughter, Suzanne Chapman of Greenville; son, Rev. Jerry Chapman, Jr.; two grandchildren; mother, Rachel Davenport of Anderson; brother, Ron Davenport of El Campo, TX and sister, Sandra Joan Van Deusen of Chattanooga, TN.

Funeral services were held Sept. 13 at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

LT. ARLIE L. TINSLEY

Lt. Arlie Leimo Tinsley, 83, of Pelzer, died Sept. 12, 2008 at Hospice House in Anderson.

Born in Liberty, he was a son of the late John W. and Mary Petit Tinsley. He was retired from the Greenville City Police Department. He was also a U.S. Marine Corp Veteran of World War II and later served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve.

Surviving are his wife, Clara Kelley Tinsley of the home; daughter, Vickie Stinnett of Peler; two sons, Ted tinsley of Pelzer and Don Tinsley of Powdersville; sister, Elaine Jaynes of Easley; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sept. 15 in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial followed in Flat Rock Baptist Church Cemetery.


PATSY M. TRIPP

Patsy Ruth Murphy Tripp, 79, formerly of Powdersville, widow of James Larry Tripp, died Sept. 10, 2008 at the home of her daughter, Patti Riddle.

She was born in Laurens County, daughter of the late Edgar Martin and Pallie Woodson Murphy.  She retired from Easley High School and was a member of Siloam Baptist church.

Surviving are three daughters, Lynn T. Moore of Piedmont, Joan T. Clinger of Trenton, OH and Patti T. Riddle of Easley; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sept. 12 in the Chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Powdersville Road. Burial followed in Siloam Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 154 Milestone Way, Greenville, SC 29615.


JOSEPHINE DEAN

Josephine Dean, 60, of Williamston, died Sept. 12, 2008.

Funeral service was held Sept. 16 at W.I. Peek - F.W. Jackson Memorial Chapel of the Unity Mortuary of Anderson. Interment followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.


LOUISE BULOW MOSES

Louise Bulow Moses, of Piedmont, died Sept. 11, 2008 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Shelby, NC, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Horace Lockhart.

Surviving are Vickie McCrary, Kitty Chalmers and Sharon Bulow, all of Greenville; sons, Walter and Franklin Bulow, both of Atlanta, GA; sisters, Jennie Tyler of Greensboro, NC and Naomia Ware of Shelby, NC; and a brother, Wayne Tyler of Greensboro, NC.

Funeral services were held Sept. 15 at Watkins, Garrett and Woods Mortuary. Burial followed in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.


VERA JUNE ALLMON

Vera June Allmon, 77, of Piedmont, died Sept. 11, 2008.

Born in Knoxville, TN, she was the daughter of the late Martin M. and Alma Minnich Harbison.

She retired from Roadway Express as a billing clerk and a member of Second United Methodist Church in Knoxville, TN.

Surviving are her sons, Byron Wallace of Greer and Michael Wallace Sr. of Pelzer; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at a later date at Lynnhurst Greenwood Chapel and Cemetery in Knoxville, TN.


RONNIE DEAN HAMMOND

Ronnie Dean Hammond, 50, of Greenville, died Sept. 13, 2008.

Born in Williamston, he was the husband of Beverly Wilson Hammond and was the son of Mary Edna Hammond and the late Raymond Hammond.

He was the owner of Hammond Lawn Services and was employed by Wal-Mart.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are two children, Brandie Hammond and R.J. Hammond, both of Greenville; one grandson; brother, Tommy Hammond of Easley; sister, Ann Rector of Greenville; and stepfather, Robert Simpson.

Funeral service was held Sept. 17 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest Chapel. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
