WILLIAMSTON - Lee Roy Elgin, 82, of 122 W. 2nd Street, widower of Leona “Bill” Garner Elgin, died Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at his home.

Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late William Fred and Gertrude King Elgin. He retired from Mount Vernon Mills after fifty years of service and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Williamston.

Surviving are a daughter, Nelline E. Webb of Williamston; daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie and Larry Greer of Anderson, Jan and Gene Lufkin of Williamston; brothers, Jared Elgin and Leonard Elgin, both of Anderson, Horace Elgin of Florida; sister, Lois Mize of Anderson; grandchildren, Kenetha Timms, Kenneth Stringer, Larry Greer, Jr., Michael Elgin, Tim Greer, John Greer, Tyler Lufkin, and Brittany Fowler; and great-grandchildren, Ashley Timms, Hannah Elgin, Drew Greer, Camryn Greer, Zach Greer, Madison Greer, Kolby Greer, and Kyle Greer.

He was predeceased by son, Roy Stanley Elgin; brother, Albert Elgin; and sisters, Ruth Elgin, Janie Burton, Gladys Cox, and Sybil Poore.

Visitation was 3:00-4:00 p.m. Friday at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Funeral services were held 4:30 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Mark Roberts officiating. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family is at the home of a granddaughter, Brittany Fowler, 302 Ridgecrest Way, Williamston.

CHAPLAIN WILLIAM M. MAJOR

Chaplain William M. “Bill” Major, 92 of West Columbia died Aug. 25, 2008.

He was born in Piedmont to Waymon Perry and Etta Fleming Major. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force. He was ordained in the United Methodist Church and after serving 10 years as a local pastor, he continued as chaplain to the S.C. State Hospital and Craft Farrow Hospital.

Surviving are his wife, the former Lou Spearman of Piedmont; daughters, Ruth Mason, Nancy Seals and Mary Lou Carroll; sons, William Major and Lee Major; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; brothers, Waymon Major and Roy Major; sisters Frances Major and Lois Ford.

DONALD JOSEPH KLIMEK SR.

WILLIAMSTON, SC - Donald “Don” Joseph Klimek, Sr., 71, husband of Rose Marie Cogan Klimek, died Saturday, August 30, 2008 at Regency Hospital at St. Francis Downtown.

Born in Allentown, PA, he was a son of the late Jacob J. and Anna Wilke Klimek. He was formerly employed with Southwark Metal, a member of Masonic Greenleaf Lodge #0561 in Allentown, PA, and a retired member of the Sheet Metal Workers Local Union #19 out of Philadelphia, PA. Mr. Klimek was also a United States Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

Surviving are his wife of the home; daughter, Ramona Klimek Parker of Woodruff, SC; son, Donald J. Klimek, Jr. of Allentown, PA; daughter, Kris Klimek Hilliard of Whitehall, PA; two brothers, Tommy Klimek of Orefield, PA, Tim Klimek of Emmaus, PA; three sisters, Mary Wolle of Walnutport, PA, Linda Sommers of Bath, PA, Ann Labatad and her husband, Anthony of Jacksonville, NC; four grandchildren, Travis Klimek, Beth Shoemaker, Heather Shoemaker, Lynsi Klimek; and one great-grandchild, Ella Klimek Myers.

He was predeceased by a sister, Susan Strohl.

The family received friends 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.

Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home chapel. Burial followed in the M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery in Anderson.

JAMES W. BALLARD

James Wesley Ballard, 70, of Prosperity and Pelzer, died Aug. 30, 2008.

Born in Anderson, he was the son of the late James Wesley “Wes” and Mildred Wall Ballard. He retired from the S.C. Employment Security Commission and was a member of Chapin Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Doris Ann Lynn Ballard of Prosperity; son, Kevin Bone of West Columbia; daughters, Mili, Julie and Francie Ballard of Rock Hill and Kristi Bone of West Columbia; and four grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Sept. 3 at Beaverdam Baptist Church Cemetery in Williamston.

WILMA M. WATSON

Wilma Bernice Mulkey Watson, 79, of Easley, died Aug. 30, 2008 at Hospice of the Upstate.

She was born in Pickens, a daughter of the late William Arthur and Bertie Eva Durham Mulkey. 

She was the founder and former owner of The Flower Peddler Florist in Greenville and was a member of Tremont Church of God.

Surviving are her husband, Ralph L. Watson of the home; sons, Ralph Lawrence Watson of Port Orange, FL, Jerry Michael Watson of Ormond Beach, FL and Terry Kim Watson of Pelzer; brothers, James Arthur Mulkey of Taylors and Robert Leroy Mulkey of Greenville; sister, Barbara Nell Arledge of Taylors; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held Sept. 2 in the Chapel of Robinson Funeral Home. Burial followed in Graceland Cemetery.

JUANITA REECE HINDMAN

Juanita Reece Hindman of Greenville, died Aug. 30, 2008 at her home.

Born in Greenville County, she was the wife of the late James Nathaniel Hindman and a daughter of the late Luther and Nannie Johnson Reece.

She was retired from Duke Energy Company and was a member of Oak Crest Baptist Church.

Surviving is a daughter, Reatha Baldwin of Greenville; a brother, Rev. Landrum Reece of Williamston; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Sept. 2 at Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

JESSIE LEOPARD

Jessie Belle Chandler Leopard, 85, of Piedmont, widow of Wilton Leopard, died Aug. 31, 2008 at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Adelle Stone Chandler and was a homemaker.

Surviving are daughters, Ann Watson of Rock Hill and Nancy Young of Piedmont; brother, Norman Chandler of Anderson; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Sept. 2 at Guthrie Grove Church of God of the Abrahamic Faith.

VELMA MAE McGAHA BROWN

Velma Mae McGaha Brown, 86, of Powdersville, died Aug. 31, 2008.

Born in North Carolina, she was a daughter of the late William “Bill” McGaha and Flora Hall McGaha and wife of the late Marvin Jefferson Brown.

She was retired from J.P. Stevens, Dunean Plant and was a member of Washington Avenue Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Mary Long of Greenville; three sons, Jimmy Brown of Powdersville, Johnny Brown of Piedmont and Doug Brown of Easley; ten grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside service was held Sept. 3 at Graceland Cemetery West.

DOROTHY MYRTLE MERRITT TURNER

Dorothy Myrtle Merritt Turner, 81, of Williamston, passed away Saturday, August 30, 2008.

Born in Greenville County, she was the loving wife of the late Marvin Fredrick Turner and was a daughter of the late Lawrence Andrew and Millie McNeely Merritt.

Mrs. Turner attended Pelzer Church of God.

Surviving is a daughter, Jane (Charles) Beddingfield; three sons, Wayne Turner, Daniel (Dayle) Turner and Warren Timothy Turner; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one brother and one sister.

She was predeceased by two grandchildren and seven brothers and two sisters.

The funeral service was Tuesday, September 2, 2008, 3:00 pm at Pelzer Church of God, with burial in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

Visitation was Monday, at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest.

The family will be at 115 G Street, Williamston, SC, 29697. 


JANIE HAMBY

Janie Arlene Eaton Hamby, 63, of Greenville, died Sept. 1, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald Thomas Hamby.

Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Louis and Willie Mae Brown Eaton. She was formerly employed by U.S. Food Service and a member of Siloam Baptist Church.

She is survived by daughters, Donna Lynn Stolba of Greenville and Kimberly Dawn Joyce of Olive Branch, MS; son, Wesley Thomas Hamby of Greenville; sisters, Anita Hahn of Piedmont, Sammie Center of Greenville, Jeffie Lou Maddox, Judy Chalker and Bonnie Faglier, all of Augusta; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial service was held Aug. 29 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
