PELZER - Nell Greenway Collins, 92, formerly of Courtney Street, widow of Cleveland Collins, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008 at NHC Healthcare of Anderson. Born in Elberton, GA, she was the daughter of the late James and Lila Brown Greenway. She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Williamston. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth A. and Nancy Collins of Savannah, GA, Eddie and Brenda Collins of Williamston; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Visitation was 10-11 a.m. Aug. 23 at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Funeral service was held 11 a.m. Aug. 23 in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Mark Roberts officiating. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Anderson. The family was at the home of Eddie and Brenda Collins, 4 Shirley Drive, Williamston. Onie Davis Graham, 88 of Pelzer, died in Lawrenceville, GA on August 23, 2008. Born in Pelzer, she was a daughter of the late Tom and Lucinda Davis. She was preceded in death by her husband Rev. Clifford H. Graham; sons, Thomas Graham and Eddy Graham; sisters, Ethel Vaughan, Marie Culbertson, Ollie Hedden, and brothers Roy Davis and John Henry Davis. She worked in textiles. She is survived by a sister, Sara Hipps of Simpsonville; five grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Aug. 26 at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Interment followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
Judy Lane Payton, 59, wife of Charles Ray Payton of Belton, died Aug. 22, 2008 at her home. Born in Anderson County, she was the daughter of the late Joe Robert and Martha Dunlap Smith. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church and a homemaker. Surviving in addition to her husband of the home are daughters, Darlene Samples of Honea Path, Martha Beddingfield and Amanda Payton, both of Williamston; sister, Robbie Joe Perry of Belton; and four grandchildren. Funeral service was held Aug. 24 at Cox Funeral Home. Burial followed at Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Bethany Baptist Church.
Betty Hackett Gooding, 53, wife of Ken Gooding of West Union, died Aug. 24, 2008 at her home. Born in Monroe, NC to the late Reece Wade and Ruth Lake Robinson Sudberry, she was the secretary for Kens Plumbing of Oconee and attended Foothills Community Church. Surviving in addition to her husband Ken are sons, Shane Smith, Greg Gooding and Chad Gooding, all of Seneca; father and mother in law, Foster Owen and Mable Gooding; four grandchildren; brothers, Milford Hackett of Seneca, Kenneth Hackett of Easley and Billy Ray Hackett of Anderson; sisters, Wilma Seigler of Piedmont, Julie Brock of Honea Path, Barbara Riley of West Palm Beach, FL and Mary Ruther Sutherland of Lexington, KY. Funeral services were held Aug. 27 in the Sandifer Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be 1 p.m. Aug. 28 at Heritage Memorial Gardens. UNA - Herman Edward Burgess, 80, of 289 New Cut Road, Una went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at Regional Hospice Home. He was the husband of Peggy Koon Burgess of the residence and the son of the late Joseph Floy and Zoa McAlister Burgess. He was retired from Duke Energy. He was a member of Hope Freewill Baptist Church and was a native of Anderson, South Carolina. In addition to his wife he is survived by son, Eddie Burgess of Anderson; step-son, Jerry Koon of Boiling Springs and daughter Mary Myers of Anderson; and by two sisters, Lucille Bell of West Pelzer and Faye Vinson of Williamston; three grandchildren; one step-grandchild and several great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by an older brother, Joseph David Burgess. Graveside services were held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008 at Sunset Memorial Gardens officiated by Rev. Kenneth Cash and Bobby Rhymer. The family received friends Aug. 13 at Eggers Funeral Home of Boiling Springs. Alvin Dean Hollingsworth, 93, died Aug. 22, 2008. Born in Greenville, he was the son of the late Andrew Brooks and Ida Mae Sloan Hollingsworth. He was a carpenter with Childers Construction and a member of Wren Baptist Church. Surviving in addititon to his wife Helen are, daughter, Sara Ferguson of Pelzer; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral service was held Aug. 26 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home Downtown Chapel. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens. Jack Martin Bowers, 59, of Simpsonville, died Aug. 22, 2008 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born in Laurens, he was the son of Lois Riddle Bowers of Laurens and the late Donald P. Bowers. He was in the U.S. Marine Reserves during Vietnam, employed by Fluor Daniel and was of the Baptist faith. Surviving in addition to his mother are a daughter, Sara Christine Bowers of Falls Church, VA; and brother, Jeff Y. Bowers of Piedmont. Funeral services were held Aug. 26 in The Kennedy Mortuary Chapel. Entombment followed in Forest Lawn Cemetery Mausoleum. Vera Mildred Hester Browning, 87 of Greer, widow of William Eddie Browning, died Aug. 22, 2008 at Lila Doyle Nursing Center in Seneca. A native of Piedmont, daughter of the late Rev. William Robert and Lula Garrett Hester, she was a retired employee of Textube Corporation and a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Surviving are a daugher, Donna Harris of Salem; one grandson; brother, Rev. Jack Hester of Easley; three sisters, Thelma Smith of Greer, Eunice Vaughn of Greenville and Ellen Davis of Simpsonville. Katherine Holcombe Johnson, 80 of Piedmont, died Aug. 24, 2008. She was the daughter of the late George Holcombe and the late Maude Ramsey Holcombe. She was a member of Reedy Fork Baptist and was retired from the 3M Company. She is survived by one daughter, Linda Long Hoskinson of Piedmont; one son, Dan Johnson of Greenville; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral service was held Aug. 27 at Reedy Fork Baptist Church. Burial followed at Greenville Memorial Gardens. Bobby Tony Rogers, 52, husband of Robbie Grice Rogers of Pelzer, died Aug. 23, 2008. Born in Pelzer, he was a son of the late Clyde Franklin and Margie McCoy Rogers. He was employed by the Sammy Ellison Service Center. In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, Travis Rogers of Pelzer, Todd Rogers and Avery Rogers, both of Belton; daughter, Tasha Rogers; sisters, Dorothy Yarborough of Asheville, NC, Susie Riddle of W. Pelzer, and Sherry Owen of Pelzer; and five grandchildren. Visitation will be 1-2:45 p.m. Thursday at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Pine Lawn Cemetery in Pelzer. The family is at the home of a son, Travis Rogers, 819 Beech Springs Road, Pelzer.
Gale Rogers, 61, of Honea Path, husband of Dianna Tallent Rogers, died Aug. 24, 2008. Born in Jackson County, NC, he was a son of the late Henry R. and Sylvia Steinwymare Rogers. He was employed with Timber Sil and a member of St. Michaels Lutheran Church. He was also a U.S. Army veteran. Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Carton Henry Rogers of Clemson and Scottie Clark of Anderson; two brothers, Larry and Alan Rogers, both of Pelzer; and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Thursday, August 28, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown with visitation to follow. |
