Rebecca Joan Cherry, 76, of Rushville, Indiana, died June 26, 2008 at the Flatrock River Lodge. Born in Rushville, IN, she was the daughter of Dewey Price and Catherine Aileen Ryan Cox. She retired from the former Marion County Indianapolis Medical Pool as an office worker. She was a resident of Pelzer for 18 years. Surviving are son Doug Cherry of Martinsville, TN; two daughters, Lyn Cherry Stribling of Seneca and Kay Beaupre of Lowell; brother, Jim Cox of Cocoa Beach, FL; sisters, Sue Frie of Marion, IL, Doris Peterson of Bloomington, IN and Martha Todd of Rushville, IN; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A celebration of life service was held June 30, 2008 at Todd Funeral Home in Rushville, IN.
Barbara Smith, wife of Charles Grady Smith, died May 30, 2008. She was born in Williamston, daughter of the late Lula and Henry Owens. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Sharon Smith.
Steven Randolph Freeman, 57, husband of Carol Gibson Freeman of Anderson, died July 22, 2008 at the AnMed Health Medical Center in Anderson. Born in Anderson, he was employed at Sew Simple in Fountain Inn and was a member of Clearview Baptist Church in Anderson. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his father, Jim E. Freeman; mother, Betty A. Freeman; daughter, April Michele Freeman of Williamston; son, Steven Russell Freeman of Anderson; one granddaughter; brother, R. Neil Freeman; and sister, Debra Bridges. Graveside services were held July 24 at New Silver Brook Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Anderson Free Clinic, P.O. Box 728, Anderson, SC 29622.
Marcell Rutledge, 79, of Williamston, died July 20, 2008. He was the son of the late Lemuel and Lillie Rutledge. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Eloise Rutledge of the home; daughter, Brenda McDavid; son, Jerry Rutledge, both of Williamston; and one grandson. Funeral services were held July 24 at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.
Thomas Land, 87, husband of Joann Land, died July 21, 2008 at Summit Place Living Center, Simpsonville. Born in Conestee, he was a son of the late Millie Reynolds Land. He had worked as grocer and as a maintenance worker for the textile industry. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a stepdaughter, Faye McClure of Landrum; and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held July 24 at Lebanon United Methodist Church in Honea Path.
Lionell Grier, 90, of Williamston, died July 20, 2008. Funeral services were held July 26 at New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
EASLEY - Doris Valerie Martin Brooks, 79, wife of J.D. Brooks, Sr., of 103 Harrison Road, died at her home on Sunday, July 27, 2008. Born in Gaffney, she was the daughter of the late Ethel Evans Martin. She retired from Brooks Tile Company and was a member of Tanglewood Baptist Church. In addition to her husband of the home, she is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra B. and Mark Conant of Easley, Debra B. and Lee Gray of Williamston; son, Joseph D. Brooks, Jr. of the home; grandchildren, Denise Conant Owens, Caresse Conant Jowers, Joseph D. Brooks, III, Jody Brooks Colbert, Diana Brooks, Brooks Gray and Rosemary Gray; and great-grandchildren, Caleb Owens, Kaylee Owens, Riley Owens, and Ansley Jowers. Family members are at the home and received friends 1-2 p.m Wednesday at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Funeral services followed in the chapel with the Rev. C.W. Hicks and the Rev. Shane Donald officiating. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.
February 18, 1936 - July 29, 2008 WILLIAMSTON, SC Mr. Alford Junior Welborn, age 72 of 602 Willingham Road, husband of the late Ruby Mae Maroney Welborn, passed away on Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson. Born in Hartwell, GA on February 18, 1936, Mr. Welborn was the son of the late Clarence Welborn and Lexie Garner Welborn. He was a United States Air Force veteran and retired from the Real Estate Industry. He was of the Baptist Faith. Survivors include his sons, Alford Michael Mike Welborn and his wife, Darlene and Roger Dale Welborn and his wife, Lynn, all of Williamston; sisters, Dolly Mae Powell of Mauldin, and Barbara Adams of Townville; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by a son, James Ronald Welborn. A Graveside Service will be held on Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at 11:00 am at Oakdale Baptist Church Cemetery officiated by the Reverends Larry Baldwin and Landrum Reece. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621. Jane Summer Ragland, 85, died July 25, 2008 at the Brian Center Nursing Home in Columbia. She was born in Newberry to the late John Harrison and Mamie Swittenberg Summer. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer and a piano teacher. She is survived by her husband, Charles Emerson Ragland; children, Charles E. Ragland Jr. of Selinsgrove, PA, John Harrison Ragland of Piedmont, Kathryn Ragland of Hopkins, and Christopher R. Ragland of Fountain Inn; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. August 1 at the Luthern Church of the Redeemer, 1515 Boundary St., Newberry.
