BETTY JO KERSEY

Betty Jo Childs Kersey, 72, of Piedmont, widow of Clarence Arlie Kersey, died June 10, 2008 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Pickens, she was a daughter of the late Lewis Leroy and Rosei Alder Bearden Childs. She was retired from Carolina Fashions and a Baptist.

Surviving are sons, Carlos Childs of Piedmont, Rickey Kersey of Williamston, Greg Kersey of Easley, Bobby Joe Kersey of Cross Hill; daughters, Donna Clark, Debra Bryant, Tammy Carroll, all of Piedmont; brothers, Devoe Childs of Greenville, Lewis Childs of Alabama, Robert Childs of Easley; sister, Patrica Poteet of North Carolina; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held June 13 at Greenville Memorial Gardens.


NINA L. RICE

Nina L. Rice, 82 of Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center died June 12, 2008.

Born in Hodges, she was a daughter of the late William Henry and Marie Norris Rice. 

She was a member of Greenwood First Baptist Church and retired from Connie Maxwell Children’s Home.

She is survived by one brother, Walter Rice of Belton; one sister, Nancy R. Hanley of Belton.

Funeral service was held June 14 at Cox Funeral Home Chapel in Belton. Burial followed at Big Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Martha Franks Retirement Center in Laurens.


GLADYS D. MILLER

Gladys Duncan Miller, 86 of Clemson, widow of A.W. “Bruno” Miller, died June 11, 2008 at Lila Doyle Nursing Care Facility.

Born in Oconee County, a daughter of the late Matthew and Ollie Nix Duncan, she was a former employee of Clemson University and was a member of Pendleton United Methodist Church.

Surviving are five sons, Roger Miller of Sumter, Ray Miller of Olathe, KS, Lane Miller, Neal Miller and Steve Miller, all of Clemson; one daughter, Sybil Miller of Clemson; one brother, Russell Duncan of Seneca; four sisters, Hazel Stone of Williamston, Mildred Littleton of Easley, Beatrice Garrett of Walhalla, Annie Ruth Vinson of Otto, NC; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held June 14 at Pendleton United Methodist Church. Private interment followed in Old Stone Church Cemetery.

ROSCOE LINDER SCOTT, JR.

ORANGEBURG, SC - Roscoe Linder Scott, Jr., 77, of Orangeburg, passed away on Friday, June 13, 2008 at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg following a brief illness and cancer. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather.

Born in Hartwell, GA, he was the son of the late Roscoe Scott, Sr., and Cola DeRosa. He was a member of Whitefield Baptist Church in Belton.

Mr. Scott served his country in the Air Force retiring after twenty-one years of service and was a Korean War veteran. After his military career, he and his family resided in Williamston, where he was employed by the U.S. Post Office in Belton for twenty years.

Following his retirement from the Post Office, he spent the remainder of his life caring for his wife, whom he loved, very, very much.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Burgess Scott of Orangeburg, SC; father, William DeRosa of Sebastian, FL; two daughters, Malinda Wilson of Orangeburg and Theresa Alewine of Piedmont; five grandchildren, Amanda and Matthew Wilson of Orangeburg, David Wilson of Columbia, TN, Clifton Clark of Piedmont, and John Alewine of Piedmont; two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Elijah Wilson, both of Columbia, TN; and one sister, Patricia Blaga of Sebastian, FL.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Monday, June 16, 2008 at Whitefield Baptist Church in Belton. Officiating were the Rev. Dr. Charles Strickland, the Rev. Dr. Ron Fousek and the Rev. Jerry Wilson. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Anderson.

Family received friends at Whitefield Baptist Church between 1:30-2:45 p.m. on Monday, June 16, 2008 prior to the funeral service.

Gray Mortuary, Pelzer was in charge of the arrangements.


BETTY OWENS

Betty Monroe Owens, 77, of Piedmont, widow of James Clifford Owens, died June 14, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville.

Born in Piedmont, she was a daughter of the late Lee and Nancy Abigale Anders Monroe. She retired from J. P. Stevens.

She is survived by daughters, Delois Ann Ashworth of Anderson, Karen Jane Camden of the home; sons, Otis Lee Owens of Greenville, James Randall Owens of West Pelzer; sisters, Ruth Locke, Jane Evatt, both of Piedmont; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held June 16 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.


JAY ‘REESE’ SANDERS

Jay Leigh “Reese” Sanders, 37, of Greenville, died June 13, 2008.

Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of Jack Richard Sanders and Mary Jane Ellison Davis. She was a member of Harmony Church, Gateway House, and NAMI.

She is survived by her father Jack Richard Sanders and his wife Patty of Greenville; mother, Jane Davis  and her husband Butch of Piedmont; daughters, Amber Noel Tiamzion of Wichita Falls, TX, Amanda Nicole Reese of Greenville; son, Micah Jack Reese of Greenville; grandmothers, Louise Ellison of Piedmont; Connie Reese of Greenville; brother, Michael Kevin Sanders of Fountain Inn; step-sisters, Sonja Davis Fricks, Tonja Davis Davenport, Mandy Waldrop, and Brandy Tucker; and step-brothers, Eugene Davis, Scotty Davis and Greg Davis.

Memorial service was held June 15 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.

ESSIE CATHERINE JORDAN FORD

Essie Catherine Jordan Ford, 83, widow of the late David C. Ford of Williamston, died June 14, 2008 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Anderson County, she was the daughter of the late Henry D. and Essie Watson Jordan. She retired from Mt. Vernon Mills and was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church.

Surviving are son, Larry Ford of Piedmont; daughters, Glenda Paxton of Williamston and Sue Evans of Anderson; sisters, Mary Ruth Mitchell of Anderson and Dorothy Hart of Belton; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held June 16 at Hillcrest Baptist Church. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.


LINDA BROWN

Linda Elizabeth Clunan Brown, 54, wife of William Arthur “Monkey” Brown, of Starr, died June 13, 2008 at her home.

Born at the Travis Air Force Base in Solara, CA, she was a daughter of the late Charles W. and Dolores Mach Clunan. She was employed by the Magnolia Veterinary Clinic and a member of Starr United Methodist Church.

In addition to her husband of the home, she is survived by children, Kristi Perkins of Huntsville, AL, Glenn Dooley of Starr; granddaughter; sister, Tina M. Lollis; brothers, Bill Clunan and Tommy Clunan.

SARA LOUISE CALHOUN

Sara Louise Calhoun, 63, of Piedmont, wife of Boyce Mac Calhoun, died June 15, 2008 at Greenville Memorial Medical Center.

Born in Duncan, she was the daughter of the late Hugh Woodrow and Clara Burch Johnson.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Piedmont Church of God.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are two daughters, Judy Durham and Natosha Thompson, both of Greenville; three stepdaughters, Cindy Golden and Doris Marusa, both of Florida, Jan Marie of Colorado; two stepsons, Michael Calhoun of Greenville and Rickey Calhoun of Florida; sister, Betty King of Lyman; brother, Jerry Johnson of Greenville; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held June 18 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, downtown chapel. Burial followed in Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery.


JOHN MARSHALL

John McCall Marshall, 91, of Anderson, widower of Harriet Ann Horton Marshall died June 17, 2008 at Richard Campbell Veterans Nursing Home.

Born in Piedmont, he was a son of the late Joshua McCall and Antho Pope Marshall.

He was a US Army Veteran of World War II, and retired from the Greenwood County Health Department.

Surviving are two daughters, Joanne Marshall Mauldin of Weaverville, NC and Martha Marshall Taylor of Anderson; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Graveside services will be held June 19  at 2 p.m. at Magnolia Cemetery.


JEAN GAMBRELL BLACKWELL

Jean Gambrell Blackwell, 71, of Spartanburg, died June 16, 2008 at Mary Black Memorial Hospital.

Born in Pendleton she was the daughter of the late Fred Madison and Ressie Whitten Gambrell. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Douglas L. Backwell; two daughters, Kimberly Blackwell Miro of Valrico, FL and Dawn Blackwell Drummond of Pelzer; four grandchildren; four brothers, Fred Gambrell of Florence, AL, Harvey Gambrell of Marietta, GA, Lawrence “Bub” Gambell of Belton, and David Gambrell of Sandy Springs; and a sister, Thalia Coleman of Largo, FL.

Funeral services were held June 18 at St. Paul United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Graceland Cemetery.

LEONA ROGERS

Leona Virginia Tessnear Rogers, 86, of Williamston, widow of Mason Rogers, died June 12, 2008 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Lillian Tessnear. She retired from the Kendall Company and was a member of Whitefield Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughter, Paulette Francis Rogers Ray; son, Steve Roy Rogers, both of Williamston; sister, Mildred Cheek of Anderson; brother Robert Tessnear of Piedmont; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held June 15 at Whitefield Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.


MELISSA GREENE WELLS

Melissa Greene Wells, 35, of Pelzer, died June 12, 2008 in Greenville.

Born in Anderson, she was the daughter of Frank Greene and Ruby Sanders Dyar.

In addition to her mother, she is also survived by step-father, Bryan Dyar; fiancé, Brad Chapman; children, Samantha, Kayla, Jesse and Nicholas Wells; brothers, Frankie Sanders and Jonathan Dyar; sister Misty Green; and grandmother, Nancy Sanders.

Funeral services were held June 16 at Woodlawn Sosebee Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Cedar Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.


MARY OBERA ‘OBIE’ T. PAGE

Mary Obera “Obie” Taylor Page, 69, of Piedmont, died June 12, 2008.

Born in Pelzer, she was the daughter of the late Milburn M. and Madgie Tippett Taylor. She retired from Michelin North America Inc. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Simpsonville.

 Surviving are her husband, Elbert R. Page; three sons, Terry S. Page of Mauldin, Chris B. Page of Taylros and Mike K. Page of Anderson; sister, Betty T. Fowler of Greenville; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were held June 15 at Calvary Baptist Church in Simpsonville. Interment followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

JOHN EDWIN FERGUSON SR.

John Edwin Ferguson, Sr., 58, husband of Judy Woods Ferguson of Belton, died June 13, 2008 at his home.

Born in Greenville County, he was the son of the late John Harold and Edna Gailey Ferguson.

Surviving in addition  to his wife of the home are: son, John E. Ferguson, Jr. of Travelers Rest; daughters, Cindy Bayne of Travelers Rest and Tammy Capeles of Piedmont; step-daughter, Cathy Alexander of Gray Court; brother, Mike Ferguson of Greenville; sisters, Linda Barrett of PA, Chyryl Holder of Piedmont and Felecia Nix of Travelers Rest; and three grandchildren.


HARRIET GILBERT

Harriet Minerva Tarbell Gilbert, 79, wife of Marion Seymour Gilbert, of Pelzer, died June 14, 2008 at her home.

Born in Mount Morris, NY, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Hazel Philhower-Swartz Arbell. She was a homemaker

In addition to her husband of the home, she is survived by daughters, Linda Guerin and Marilyn Gilbert, both of Pelzer; sons, Frederick, James, Terry, Ronald and Gary Gilbert, all of Pelzer; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held June 18 at Midway Bible Church. Burial followed in Harriet Memorial Cemetery.
