GROVER CHILDRESS

Grover Benjamin Childress, 70, husband of Betty Tucker Childress, of Piedmont, died May 27, 2008 at his home.

Born in Pickens County, he was a son of the late James Benjamin and Margaret Tecola Clark Childress, and retired from Wal-Mart as a truck driver.

In addition to his wife of the home, he is survived by daughters, Tammy Brown, Renee McKinney, both of Greenville, Robin Upshall and Vickie Shirley, both of Pelzer; son, Benny Childress of Piedmont; sisters, Carolyn Bell of Piedmont, Sue Payne of Ware Place; brothers, Alton Childress, James Childress, and Arnold Childress, all of Piedmont; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held May 30 in the Chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

CASS JUSTIN CASTO

Cass Justin Casto, 27, of Greenville died May 26, 2008.

Born in Greenville, he was the son of Cass Casto and Jody Franklin Rogers.  He played semi-pro football for the Greenville Greyhounds and was employed as a security officer in the restaurant business. He was a member of the Grove Station Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Danielle Leopard of Conestee; a son, Cass Noah Casto of Greenville; step-parents, Sherri Patterson Casto of Easley and Tim Davis of Piedmont; two brothers, Nicholas Casto of Greenville and Jarrod Casto of Easley; one sister, Kacey Rogers of Piedmont.

Funeral services were held May 30 in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery.


CLAUDE PAT JENKINS

Claude Pat Jenkins, 86, widower of Sarah Ann Taylor Jenkins, died May 28, 2008 at Hospice of the Upstate.

Born in Hartwell, GA, he was the son of the late Thomas Clemy and Clara Royster Jenkins.

He was a retired Captain with the City of Greenville Fire Department. He was a member of White Oak Baptist Church and was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He was the owner of Pat’s Tackle Shop in Greenville.

Surviving are a son, Ronald P. Jenkins of Pelzer; one granddaughter; one great-grandson; three sisters, Rebecca Wiggs, Tommie Davidson and Martha Hughes; and a brother, Ray Jenkins of Mauldin.

Memorials may be made to the Hejaz Shriners, P.O. Box 667, Mauldin, SC 29662.

Graveside service was held May 30 at Woodlawn Memorial Park.


DONNIE BRYANT

Donald “Donnie” Ray Bryant, 68, of Pelzer, widower of Margie Mae Eller Bryant, died May 28, 2008 at Hospice of the Upstate.

Born in Pelzer, he was a son of Olivia Looper Bryant and the late Herman Lee Bryant. He was employed by the Standard Hall Group in Piedmont and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Pelzer.

He is survived by his mother, Olivia Looper Bryant of Pelzer; daughters, Debbie Huff, Diane Bell, both of Pelzer; brother, the Rev. Bill Bryant of Pelzer; sister, Nancy Chapman of Clinton; and four grandsons.

Funeral services were held June 1 at New Hope Baptist Church in Pelzer. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

BILL RAY WILSON

Billy “Bill” Ray Wilson, 69, husband of Glenda Ann Bailey Wilson of Pelzer, died May 30, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late Eva Wilson and the late DeWitt Wilson. He retired from McCown Heating and Air Conditioning and was a former chief of the Piercetown Volunteer Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife, Glenda Ann Wilson of the home; sons, Johnny Ray Wilson of Greenville, James Darrin Wilson of Fountain Inn, Victor DeWitt Wilson of Anderson; brother Gary Roger Wilson of Greenville; and six grandchildren.

Funeral service was held June 1 at the Gray Mortuary Chapel. Burial followed in Graceland Cemetery.


CAROLYN MATTHEWS

Carolyn Jordan Matthews, 69, of Williamston, died May 31, 2008.

Born in Pelzer, she was a daughter of the late Nellie Ross Jordan and the late Lawson Jordan. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by a son, John Willie Shaw, Jr. of Belton; daughters, Michelle Cash of Williamston, Darlene Powell of Williamston; and sister Judy Shaw of Pelzer.

Memorial service was held June 3 at the Gray Mortuary Chapel.


MARY DARBY

Mary Margaret Carter Darby, 70, widow of Ray Hubert Darby, of Pelzer, died June 1, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital.

Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late Walter Lee and Lois Escoe Carter. She was retired from the Kendall Company in Pelzer and was a member of Pelzer First Baptist Church.

She is survived by her three sons, Eddie Darby, Dale Darby and Darren Darby, all of Pelzer; two daughters, Vickie Cothran of Williamston and Darlene Canup of Pelzer; and 12 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held June 3 at Pelzer First Baptist Church. Burial followed in Pine Lawn Cemetery.


JANET ‘SUE’ COGGINS

Janet Arsula ‘Sue” Coggins, 84, of Greer, died May 31, 2008 at Allen Bennett Memorial Hospital.

A native of Pickens County, daughter of the late Walter Mullikin and Gladys Smith Mullikin, she was retired from J.P. Stevens Greer Plant and was a member of Greer First Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Carl D. Coggins of the home; three daughters, Ann Kearney of Pelzer, Jane Scoggin of Spartanburg and Linda Smith of Anderson; two sons, Johnny Gilstrap of Cedar Hill, TN and Bradley Gilstrap of Blue Ridge; stepson, Ray Coggins of Columbia; brother, J.W. Mullikin of Liberty; sister, Margaree Frank of Fort Myers, FL; 17 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held June 4 at Wood Mortuary. Burial followed in Wood Memorial Park.

CHARLES ALLEN HIOTT

Charles Allen Hiott, 66, of Easley, died May 31, 2008 at Palmetto Baptist Health in Easley.

Born in Piedmont, he was a son of the late Henry Smith and Annie Laurel Gibson Hiott. He previously worked at Danfoss and attended Missionary Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara Joyce Lynch Hiott of the home; two daughters, Rhonda Shehan and Denise Bagwell, both of Pickens; two sons, Chuck Carlisle of Simpsonville and Keith Carlisle of the home; two brothers, Joe Hiott of Piedmont and Ray Hiott of Easley; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held June 3 at The Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial followed in Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery.


MYRTLE T. JONES

Myrtle Townsend Jones, 95, formerly of Laurens, died June 1, 2008 at Hospice of the Piedmont in Greenwood.

Born in Newport, TN, she was a daughter of the late Charlie George and Emma Caldwell Townsend. She retired from J.P. Stevens Watts Plant and was a member of St. James United Methodist Church.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are one son, Charles Norman Jones of Topeka, KS; two step-daughters, Doris Thrasher of Pelzer and Kathleen Peace of Greenville; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held June 3 at St. James United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery.

ELIZABETH BERGGRUN

Elizabeth Anne Berggrun, 52, died May 31, 2008.

Surviving are her mother, Audrey Loredo of Easley; two brothers, Paul Berggrun of Pelzer and Raymond Berggrun of Easley.

A memorial service was held June 4 at Cremation Society of South Carolina, 328 Dupont Dr., Greenville.


DOROTHY MOTES CASON

Dorothy Motes Cason, 73, wife of James Henry Cason of Belton died June 1, 2008 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Anderson County, she was the daughter of the late John Robert and Nellie Dean Motes. She was a member of Eastview Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband of the home are sons, Marty Keith and Timothy Bryan Cason, both of Belton and two grandchildren.

Funeral service was held June 4 at Cox Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Garden of Memories.


AMOS GILLIAM JR.

Amos Gilliam, Jr., 61, of Greenville, died May 31, 2008 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

He was the son of Amos Gilliam, Sr., and the late Annie Lee Gilliam.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara Dogan Gilliam; and two daughters, Tiffany A. Gilliam of Piedmont and Andria Gilliam of Spartanburg; four sisters, Betty Gilliam of Piedmont, Lois Washington of Greenville, Gail Jamison of Simpsonville and Yvette Norris of Williamston; two brothers, Samuel Gilliam of Piedmont and Danny Gilliam of Greenville.

Funeral services were held June 4, 2008 at Flat Rock Missionary Baptist Church, Piedmont, SC.


ROBERT D. ‘DAG’ WILSON

Robert Durward “Dag” Wilson, 74, died June 2, 2008.

Born in Williamston, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Harper Lee Wilson. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Navy. He was Vice-President of Camper Products in North Carolina and later Southeast Sales Rep for Krestmark of Texas. He was a member of Greer First Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Marian Hendrix Wilson; son, Rev. Rhett Hendrix Wilson of Laurens; three grandchildren; sister, Eva Ann Wilson Via of Belmont, NC; and brother, Martin Wilson of Mauldin.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. June 5, 2008 at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg. 

Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Thursday in the parlor of First Baptist Church of Greer.

JOE E. CULBERTSON

Joe Earl Culbertson, 77, husband of Nathalee Nabors Culbertson of Honea Path, died May 30, 2008 at his home.

Born in Anderson County, he was the son of the late John Mattison and Lottie Mae Ross Culbertson. He was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church.

He was on the Board of Directors of Friendship Fire Dept. a commissioner with Broadmouth Water District and a farmer.

Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are; sons, Eddie Culbertson of Fountain Inn, Carroll Ross, Ray Ross and Jimmy Ross, all of Belton; daughters, Debra Stanfield of Fountain Inn and Cellie Scott of Belton; brothers, Norman Culbertson of Pelzer and Roy Culbertson of Greenville; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held June 1 at Shady Grove Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

EFFIE STEGALL WILSON

Effie Stegall Wilson, 86, of the Piercetown Community, widow of the late William Garrison Wilson, died May 30, 2008 at the Rainey Hospice House.

Born in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late Patrick Spencer and Bessie Smith Stegall. She was retired from Southern Railroad. She was a member of Whitefield Baptist Church.

Surviving are her sons, William Spencer Wilson of Seneca, Wilton Michael Wilson of Simpsonville, Keith Mark Wilson of Anderson; daughter, Rachel Wilson Trotter of Anderson; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; and sister, Ruby Couch of Williamston.

Funeral services were held June 1 at Whitefield Baptist Church. Burial followed in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.

ELLIS STONE

Ellis Aileen Traynham Stone, 90, of Pelzer, widow of William Adger Stone, Sr., died June 3, 2008 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late Joe Pelham and Aileen Darby Traynham. She retired from Union Carbide and was a member of Washington Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughter, Carolyn Stone Neely of Ware Place; son, William A. “Bill” Jr. of Piedmont; sisters, Gladys T. Nicholson of Pelzer, Mary T. League and Iris T. Nelson, both of Greenville; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. June 5 at Washington Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

PHYLLIS K. WILLIAMS

Phyllis Odell Kelly Williams, 73, of Greenville, formerly of Pelzer, died June 2, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital.

Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late  Arthur and Iler Kelly. She retired from Kemet and was a member of Bessie Road Baptist Church.

Surviving are son, Christopher E. Williams of Easley; daughter, Phyllis Diane Fortin of the home; brother, Fred Kelly of McCormick; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1 - 2:45 p.m. on June 5 at the Bessie Road Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Piedmont.

Family members are at their respective homes.


BROADUS YOUNG

Broadus Young of Piedmont died May 24, 2008.

Surviving are sons, Marcus Young, Shatodd Young and Nicholas Young, all of Greenville.

Private services were held June 2.


VIRGINIA FAULKNER

Eunice Virginia Glasby Faulkner, 89, of Williamston, widow of Henry Hubert Faulkner, died June 1, 2008 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Williamston, she was a daughter of the late Calhoun Pruitt and the late Lillian Reynolds Glasby. She retired from Mt. Vernon Mills and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Williamston.

Surviving are Linda Casey of Williamston, Deb Whitcomb of Fountain Inn, Terry Glasby of Williamston; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Graveside services were held June 4 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

GERALD KELLEY

Gerald Albert Kelley, 76, of Belton, husband of Virginia Masters Kelley, died June 2, 2008 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late Sidney Cleo and Ozelle Cooley Kelley. He was retired from Metric Garment and a member of Beech Springs Tabernacle.

Surviving are his wife of the home; brothers and sisters, Leonard Kelley, Elder Magaha, James Kelley, Barbara Stroud. Bobby Kelley, Betty Stroud, Ronnie Kelley, Roger Kelley, Judy Baldwin, all of Pelzer, Dareen Coker, Brenda Cothran, both of Belton.

Funeral services were held June 4 at Shady Grove Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
