THOMAS LAWRIE HIBBARD

Tom, 41, otherwise known as the Giant Pumpkin Man in Broomfield, peacefully passed away on March 30, 2007 with his family by his side. He fought a fearless and aggressive four-year battle against Melanoma, relenting only after it metastasized to his brain. Until the end, he remained steadfast in his desire to live a full life as his body was failing him. His passion was the mountains and his first love was Long’s Peak. He was an extreme rock climber, mountaineer, biker, telemark skier, and photographer. As his cancer progressed, he pursued less physical hobbies, but with no less passion.

He started growing the largest pumpkins in town, surpassing his goal with a 548-pounder. He also became an accomplished fine woodworker with his very first woodworking project – an heirloom hope chest for his daughter, followed by a steamer trunk for his son. He was a devoted father and husband and a hardworking employee. His career centered around Information Technology ending as a PMO Manager at GE Access/Avnet, but he never wanted to be defined by his work. He was, however, the proud leader of the winning team of the pumpkin launch contest. His team, Hibbard’s Hurlers, built a trebuchet that launched a 6-pound pumpkin 240 feet.

He leaves behind his wife, Joni (Schilling) Hibbard, his son Max (9) and his daughter Lea (5). Tom was born and grew up in Albany, NY. He graduated from SUNY at Oswego with a major in Math and Psychology. He listed all his hobbies and chose Denver University for his MBA/MIS graduate degree because its location provided the landscape for his favorite activities. His parents are Lawrie and Sally Hibbard of Feura Bush, NY. He has a sister Ann Von Rhedey in NY and a brother David Hibbard in NH. A public Memorial Service was held on Tuesday, April 3, at 5:00pm at the Broomfield United Methodist Church. A reception at the church followed. Memorial contributions can be made to the Dr. Rene Gonzalez Melanoma Research fund at Anschutz Cancer Pavilion, 1665 No Ursula, Mail Stop F 703 Box 6510, Aurora, CO  80045 Attn: Dr. Rene Gonzalez or to College America for Benefit of Hibbard Children c/o Wachovia Securities at 1919 14th Street Suite 100, Boulder CO, 80302 Attn: Thomas Kinder.
