CARROLL B. CHAPMAN

PIEDMONT - Carroll B. Chapman, 69, of 208 Vinewood St., husband of Peggy Arlene Lollis Chapman, went home to be with the Lord on March 19, 2008.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late Oscar and Mary Williams Chapman. Mr. Chapman was formerly employed with Metromont and J.P. Stevens Piedmont Plant. He also served as a volunteer fireman with the Piedmont Fire Department, was a United States Air Force Veteran, and a Baptist.

Surviving are his wife of the home; daughters, Pam Holden of Pelzer, Dana Chapman, Tonya Matheny of Piedmont; sons, Neil Chapman of Pelzer, Gary Chapman of Piedmont, son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Allison White of Charlotte, NC; sisters, Nellie Dee Kelley of Pelzer, Edna Allison of Piedmont; grandchildren, Tabitha Brown, Michael Chapman, Randall Smith, Misty Boyter, Derek Holden, Neely White, Sam White, Maggie White, Tristen Matheny, Caleb Lucas, and seven great-grandchildren.

The family received friends 7-8:30 P.M. Friday at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Oak Grove Baptist Church by Revs. Leon Porter and Joe Gambrell. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens. The family is at the home.

DOYLE BATES

Doyle Gene Bates, 70, husband of Martha Giles Bates, of Easley, died March 22, 2008, at his home.

Born in Crosby, TN, he was a son of the late Robert Lee and Peloma Valentine Bates. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, retired from Bi-Lo in Easley, and was a member of River Road Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Giles Bates of the home; daughters, Robin Page of Gray Court, Deborah  Bullock of Pelzer; brother, Truman Bates; sister, Emma Kate Baker, both of Piedmont; and four grandchildren.

Graveside services were held March 25 at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

THOMAS EUGENE  ‘J.R.’ ELKINS

Thomas Eugene “J.R.” Elkins, 49, of Piedmont, husband of Margaret Melton-Elkins, died March 20, 2008 in Bennettsville.

Born in Sanford, NC, he was a son of Betty Jean Clark Elkins and the late Thomas Eugene Elkins. He was employed with VF Jeans Wear and a member of Emmanuel Full Gospel Tabernacle.

Surviving are his wife of the home; sons, Lacey Carlton “Bud” Elkins of Wanchese, NC, Colton B. Jones of Piedmont; daughter, Kayla D. Owens of the home; his mother of Gulf, NC; and one granddaughter.

Funeral services were held March 23 at Emmanuel Full Gospel Tabernacle. Burial followed in Rose Hill Cemetery.

EDNA MULKEY

Martha Edna Traynum Mulkey, 88, formerly of Piedmont, widow of Roy E. Mulkey, died March 22, 2008 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late John C. Traynum, Sr., and the late Lula Spearman Traynum. She was a homemaker, and a member of First Baptist Church of Piedmont.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Graveside services were held March 25 at the Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery in Piedmont.

GARY BLACKBURN

James Gary Blackburn, 57, husband of Sandra Phipps Blackburn of Williamston died March 22, 2008 at his home.

Born in Marion, VA, he was a son of James Vernon Blackburn of Independence, VA and the late Verna Davis Blackburn. He was employed by Professional Engineering Associates of South Carolina in Greenville, a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church in Easley and a member of the church orchestra.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra Phipps Blackburn of the home; father, James Vernon Blackburn of Independence, VA; sons, Brian A. Blackburn of Greer, Brad A. Blackburn of Columbia; sisters, Betty Seferian of Southampton, NJ, Judy Hill of Coeburn, VA; brother, Randy Blackburn of Greenville; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held March 26 at Rock Springs Baptist Church in Easley. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on March 27 at Brush Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Independene, VA.

Memorials may be made to the Rock Springs Baptist Church Orchestra, 201 Rock Springs Road, Easley, SC 29642.


PHOEBE H. MARTIN

Phoebe Holiday Martin, formerly of Belton, died March 20, 2008.

Born in Anderson County, she was the daughter of the late Edward Luster and Ola Shaw Holliday. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She was a homemaker and a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving are her daughter, Cheryl Jefferson of Greer; sons, Zane Martin of Belton and Eric Martin of Pelzer; and one grandson.

Graveside services were held March 22, at Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the South Carolina Commission for the Blind, Upstate Chapter, 1430 Confederate Avenue, Columbia, SC 29202.


WILLIE R. ELY

Willie R. Ely, 77, of Greenville, died March 20, 2008 at his home.

Born in Greenwood, he was the son of the late Henry Ely. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Surviving are his wife, Edna Moss Ely; daughter, Dee Ely of the home; son, Keith Ely of Piedmont; sister, Gladys Ely of Greenville; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held March 24 at Watkins, Garrett & Woods Mortuary. Burial followed in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.


DALE THOMASON

Hubert Dale Thomason, 54, husband of Jerry Diane Painter Thomason of Piedmont, died March 21, 2008.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late Hubert and Lula Bell Houston Thomason. He was assistant manager of the Advance Auto Parts store in Pelzer.

He is survived by his wife, Jerry Diane Painter Thomason of the home; sons, Jason Dale Thomason of Piedmont, Michael Chad Thomason of Simpsonville; daughter, Misty Diane Alewine of Honea Path; brothers, Terry Darrell Thomason, Harold Douglas Thomason, both of Easley; sister, Frances Annette Thomason of Greenville; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were held March 26 in the chapel of Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.
