JIMMY SUMMEY

James Allen “Jimmy” Summey, 59, of Greer, died Jan. 9, 2007 at Allen Bennett Hospital.

A native of Greenville County, son of the late James H. and Martha Satterfield Summey, he was retired from Summey’s Cabinet, a veteran of the S.C. Army National Guard and a member of Seacoast Community Church of Charleston.

Surviving are his wife, Donna Hughes Summey of the home; a son, Heath Summey of Greer, and a daughter, Emily Ellison of Pelzer; and stepchildren, Lisa, Mark, Matt, Alice and Katie; a brother, Mike Summey of Greer; and 12 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Jan. 12 at Wood Mortuary. Burial followed in Wood Memorial Park.

MARY C. BENNEFIELD

Mary C. “Granny” Bennefield, 80, formerly of Greenville, died Jan. 9, 2007.

Born in Teaneck, NJ, she was the daughter of the late John Peter D’Arcy-Clarke and Mary Agnes Costello Clarke, and wife of the late Raymond Joe Bennefield.

 She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are four daughters, Myrtle B. Carson of Greenvile, Carol Crane of Pelzer, Sandra F. Childers of Inman and Judy B. Cole of Simpsonville; a son, Gary D. Bennefield Sr., of Greenville; a granddaughter raised in the home, Toni Osteen of Easley; 35 grandchildren; 78 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Jan. 12 at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest. Burial followed at Greenville Memorial Gardens.


WALLACE LAMAR LINDLEY

PELZER - Wallace Lamar Lindley, 85, of 109 Hampton Street, widower of Mildred Hughey Lindley, died Thursday, January 11, 2007 at the home of his son.

Born in Greenville County, he was a son of the late John Anthony and Nora Kinard Lindley. Mr. Lindley attended Ellen Woodside High School, was a member of the CCC Corps who constructed Paris Mountain State Park and other facilities, worked for and retired from Kendall Mills of Pelzer, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II Europe. He was also a member of Washington Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, Roger Lindley of Pelzer; daughter, Janet Lindley Smith and her husband, Barry of Pelzer; special friend, Andrea Turner; sister-in-law, Inez Lindley of Laurens; grandchildren, Brian Lindley and his wife, Sharon of Belton, John Lindley of Belton, Barrett Smith, Beryl Smith, Stephanie Smith, all of Pelzer; great-grandchildren, Brandon Lindley, Garrett Lindley, Kendrick Lindley, all of Belton and Cadence Elizabeth Smith of Pelzer.

He was predeceased by brothers, Dewey Lindley, Budd Lindley, Aaron (A) Lindley, Edward (Ed) Lindley, Milford Lindley, Howell Lindley, Richard Lindley; sisters, Clara Lindley Allen, Rowena Lindley Price, Eloise Lindley Stoddard.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Washington Baptist Church by Rev. Stan Candler. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

The family members were at their respective homes and received friends 2-3 p.m. Saturday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Washington Baptist Church, 208 Washington Church Rd., Pelzer, SC 29669 or to Hospice.

Gray Mortuary, Pelzer is in charge of arrangements.


TRUMAN ‘SAM’ COOLEY

Truman “Sam” Randolph Cooley, 78, husband of Shirley Johnson Cooley, of Simpsonville, died Jan. 11, 2007 at Hillcrest Hospital.

He was born in Greenville to the late Alexander A. Cooley and Martha Dora Holliday Cooley. He retired from Mills & Market Company and was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are; a son, Eddie Cooley of Fork Shoals; two daughters, Debra Worley of Dacusville and Shelby Jean Phelps of Asheville, NC; two brothers, John Cooley of Williamston and Henry Cooley of Honea Path; six sisters, Jueniva Crawford of Anderson, Katie Hanks of Honea Path, Peggy Rainey of West Pelzer and Margaret King, Minnie Lee Embry and Bertha Sue Cooley, all of Piedmont; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a wife, Lucille Hendrix Cooley.

Funeral services were held Jan. 13 in the chapel of Fletcher Funeral Service. Burial with military honors followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.


VIVIAN LEE HAMBY

Vivian Lee Massingale Hamby, 84, formerly of Easley, died on Jan. 11, 2007 at Westside Living Center.

She was a member of Crosswell First Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sisters, Cecil Ellen Turner of Greenville and Naomi Hawkins of Piedmont.

Graveside services were held Jan. 13 at Graceland Cemetery, West.


DR. JULIA SPEARES MANCINO

Dr. Julia Ann Speares Mancino, of Williamston, died Jan. 10, 2007.

She was a daughter of the late Kathleen Telford and Scott Bruce Speares.

She is survived by a daughter, Julia Ann (Judy) Mancino of Greenville; son, Joseph John Mancino, Jr., of Martinez, CA; and sisters, Laura Jo Speares Terry and Mary Speares Campbell of Anderson.

She retired from School District One and was a professor at Erskine College. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Funeral services were held Jan. 13 at Grace United Methodist Church. Burial followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

BILLY RAY SARGENT

Billy Ray Sargent, 64, of Pelzer, widower of Pamela Sue Creswell Sargent, died Jan. 11, 2007 at Hospice House.

Born in Anderson County, he was a son of Frances Cleo Baldwin Sargent and the late James Edward Sargent. He retired from Delta Woodside Plant in Fountain Inn and a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

Surviving are his mother of Pelzer; daughters, Shenae Sargent and Stephanie Sargent Williams, both of Pelzer; brother, Charles Edward Sargent of Pelzer; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at New Hope Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.


LILLIE ROBINSON

Lillie Pamela Ammons Robinson, 83, of Pelzer, widow of John Dealous Dexter Robinson, died January 12, 2007 at Anmed Health Medical Center.

Born in Sylva, NC, she was a daughter of the late Harve George and Liza Jane Styles Ammons. She was retired from the Kendall Co. and a member of Pelzer Wesleyan Church.

Surviving are daughter, Martha Robinson of the home; daughers, Bess Seagraves of Cleveland, GA, Ellen Cooley of Pelzer, Sherry Burrell of Sylva, NC; sons, William Dealous Robinson of the home, Jerry Robinson of Pelzer; sister, Becky Morgan of Asheville, NC; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Jan. 14 at Gray Mortuary Chapel, Pelzer. Burial followed in Pine Lawn Cemetery, Pelzer.


REV. CHARLES KAY

Rev. Charles William “Charlie” Kay, 88, husband of Thelma Elizabeth Hester Kay of Penrose, NC, died Jan. 13, 2007 at Ivy Hill Health & Retirement Center in Brevard, NC.

Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Charles W. and Maude Davenport Kay. He was a World War II Naval Veteran, a retired Southern Baptist Minister and a member of Little River Baptist Church.

He retired in 1981 from Lake Waccamaw First Baptist Church and served as interim pastor at several churches.

Surviving are his wife, Thelma Kay; daughter, Betsy Ellen Anders; step-daughters, Marcia Matheson, Edwina McLamb; step-sons, Ray Dove, Franklin Dove, Glenn Dove; brother, Rev. Tommy Kay; sister, Rossie Burrell; ten grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was twice married, first to Frances Caldwell Kay.

Funeral services were held Jan. 15 at Gray Mortuary Chapel. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Anderson.

Memorial services were held Jan. 16 at Little River Baptist Church.

RUDOLPH AYE SR.

Rudolph Aye, Sr., died Jan. 11, 2007 in Brunswick, GA.

He is survived by his wife, Emma Lue Ellis Aye; daughters, Karen Aye of Williamston, Sharon Genise Yvonne Aye of Pelzer and Marie Calhoun of Anderson; sons, Rudolph Aye, Jr. of Piedmont, Frankie and Roderick Aye, both of Pelzer and Kendrick Aye of Williamston; sisters, Viola Ellis of Anderson; Rebecca Sibert of Greenville, Mary Joe Edwards and Martha Smith, both of Pelzer; brother, Tommy Dan Aye of Williamston; and one grandson.

Memorial services were held Jan. 13 in the Ollie Robinson Brown Memorial Chapel of Marcus D. Brown Funeral Home.


ETRULIA LOVELIST DEAN

Etrulia Lovelist Dean died Jan. 9, 2007.

Born in Williamston to the late Mr. Luther and Mrs. Donnie Annie Curry Lovelist, she was a member of New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughters, Bettye Cannon, Victoria Lewis and Melinda Dean, all of Williamston; sons, John Wesley Sloan of Williamston and Anthony Dean of Raleigh, NC; sister, Mollie Adams of Charlotte, NC; brother, Jack Lovelist; ten grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sylvester Dean.

Funeral services were held Jan. 13 at New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church in Williamston. Burial followed in the church cemetery.


ADA TRAMMELL PATTERSON

Ada Trammell Patterson, 80, of Williamston, wife of the late William E. Patterson, died Jan. 13, 2007 at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville.

Born in Liberty, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Oliver Trammell and Emma Webb Trammell. She retired from Clark-Schwebel. She was a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church and was the last member of her immediate family.

Surviving are her daughter, Ethel R. Keller of Greenville; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Jan. 16 in The McDougald Funeral Home Chapel. Entombment followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

JAMES L. NESBITT

James Leonard Nesbitt, 66, widower of Lucille Hickey Nesbitt, died Jan. 14, 2007 at his home.

Born in Henderson County, NC, he was a son of the late Leonard L. Nesbitt and Gladys Mae Talley Nesbitt. He was a member of Blantyre Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Navy.

Surviving are daughters, Janet Padgett of Easley and Tina Desimone of Piedmont; son, Doyle L. Nesbitt of Sullivan, IN; sister, Janet Pritchett of Marietta; and ten grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Jan. 16 in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home. Burial followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.


DONALD B. HUNT

Donald B. Hunt, 75, of Fountain Inn, died Jan. 14, 2007 at his home.

Born in Wilson, NC, he was the husband of Corene Branson Hunt and the son of Willie Hunt and Nannie Leigh Pittman Hunt. He was of the Baptist faith and retired from the U.S. Air Force after serving in the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Donna Jean Allison of Piedmont and Dee Dee Hunt of Gray Court; a sister, Gladys Lamplante of NY; and two grandsons.

Funeral services were held Jan. 17 in the chapel of Cannon Funeral Home in Fountain Inn. Burial followed in Cannon Memorial Park with military honors.


WILLIAM GROVER ESKEW

William G. Eskew, 78, died Jan. 11, 2007.

Born in Greenville, he was the son of the late Furman Henry Eskew, Sr. and Virginia Ruth Chapman Eskew. He was a U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict, a member of State. St. Baptist Church, and retired from Greyhound and from SLED.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Jeanette Land Eskew of Lexington, are daughter, Jan Hott of Lexington; son, Dale Eskew of Cayce; sister, Joyce Brown of Williamston; brothers, Henry Eskew of Pelzer, Sammy Eskew of Bonifay, FL; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Jan. 15 at State Street Baptist Church. Entombment followed in Southland Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

LUCILLE RACKLEY

Lucille Hawkins Rackley, 82, of Pelzer, died Jan. 12, 2007 at her home.

Born in Pickens County, she was a daughter of the late Lonnie Horace and Mattie Bradley Hawkins. She was a member of Ruhamah Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

Surviving are her husband, Homer Rackley of the home; two sons, Marvin Rackley of Pelzer and Preston Rackley of Pickens; a daughter, Nancy R. Crymes of the home; a sister, Vinita Swaney of Anderson; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Jan. 14 in Robinson Memorial Gardens, Easley.

LLOYD THOMAS BURNS

Lloyd Thomas Burns, 62, of Travelers Rest, died Jan. 9, 2007.

He was born in Travelers Rest, a son of the late Perry D. and Junnie Mae Kidd Burns. He was of the Baptist faith, retired from VF/Wrangler Trucking Corp.

Surviving are his wife, Linda Rogers Burns of the home; a son, Shawn Burns of Piedmont; three grandchildren; a brother, W.L. Burns of Marietta; and a sister, Mary Ann Jowers of Greenville.

Memorial service was held Jan. 14 at Marietta First Baptist Church.

ROBERT GRIFFIN

Robert Griffin, 82, of Piedmont, died Jan. 11, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Laurens County, he was a son of the late James and Eva Young Griffin.

Surviving are: daughters, Paulette Lane of the home and Catherine Giles of Detroit, MI; sisters, Ella Shell of Laurens, Willie Mae Lattimore of Atlanta, GA, Daisy Marshall and Dorothy Griffin, both of Greenville; brother, Capernaum Griffin of Greenville; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Jan. 15 at Watkins, Garrett and Woods Mortuary. Burial followed in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.


LOUISE MADDEN

Louise Tannery Madden, 87, of Anderson, wife of Arthur Madden, died Jan. 14, 2007 at AnMed Health Medical Center.

Born in Oconee County, she was the daughter of the late Benson and Irene Bennett Tannery. She was retired from Cochran Shoes and a member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Arthur Madden of the home; two daughters, Tina M. Richardson of Pendleton and Patti M. Strickland of Anderson; one granddaughter; four sisters, Catherine Calloway of Anderson, Ollie Mae Crawford of Seneca, Joanne Shaw of Pendleton and Linda Taylor of Piedmont; three brothers, Robert Tannery of Winston-Salem, NC, Julian Tannery of Stanley, NC, and Randall Tannery of Westminster.

Funeral services were held Jan. 17 at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

JACK BENTLEY

Jack Bentley, 73, husband of Shirley Ann Suttles Bentley, died Jan. 13, 2007 at Hillcrest Hospital.

He was born in Greenville to the late John Henry Bentley and Jane Louise Waddell Bentley. He retired from the P.I.E. Transport Company and was a member of Beulah Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are; four sons, Jack Bentley of Mauldin, Mike Bentley of Powdersville, Dale Bentley of Gray Court and Derek Bentley of Myrtle Beach; two brothers, John “Smokey” Bentley of Pelzer and Arthur “Duck” Bentley of Greenville; a sister, Mary Boling of Greenville; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Jan. 16 at Beulah Baptist Church. Burial followed in Greenville Memorial Gardens.


MILDRED DUCKWORTH

Mildred Vehorn Duckworth, 87, of Pelzer, widow of John Mack “Gerald” Duckworth, died Jan. 15, 2007 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Pelzer, she was the daughter of the late J.F. and Lillie Mae Gosnell Vehorn. She retired from Pelzer Elementary School and was a member of Pelzer United Methodist Church.

Surviving are sons, Jerry Duckworth of Galivants Ferry, John Duckworth of Townville; brother, Roy Vehorn of Columbus, NC; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Jan. 17 at Pelzer United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery.
